#1- the balance, if the balance is a little funny, off, bottom heavy or just not "right" you won't be able to make 1 ball. #2- the tip, the tip is the faith, the reliability, the "what i will do for you" make sure your tip does not miscue, note (stay away from laminated tips) and finally, #3- the cleanlness of your shaft, you want a shaft, so smooth, so clean so slippery it literally slides out of your hands! my personal set up , is as follows-------- a Mali M-14 17 oz. cue, a le professional tip with a red fiber backing. for the shaft, Q-clean, 600 sandpaper, Q-slick. the moral of this post, don't spend thousands of dollars on a cue thinking it will make you a better player, it won't, send a message to the cue makers of the world, let them know that $300 is more than enough cue, and that quality is from the balance, tip and shaft cleanliness, not a fancy makers name! the reason why i push Mali so much on this site, is from the begining 1968 when they made their very first cue, there motto was, "make a great cue at a good price" they were the very first company to do that!!!!!! back then you either got a cheap crappy cue, or an overpriced cue that played fair. today many, many companys decided to copy Mali's philosophy, such as Luccasi, cuestix, and many others, but don't be fooled, Mali cues, still play better, are balanced better, look better and still have the greatest value, for instance, they just came out with the Mali V-9. this cue is a steal!!!!!! crushed turquiouse inlaid into african ebony, in a complicated mosaic patteren, with white borders in the forearm and butt sleeve, all for $250! try THAT! anywhere else! you could check out the full line of the Mali cues at malicloth.com

Give me a cue with a balsa wood butt and a shaft filled with lead and it may drop my game only a few percent. Provided it didn't snap on the break, I'm sure I could run racks with it.

Balance is waaaaaay overated, and misunderstood. Are you talking about the Center Of Gravity or Balance Point of the cue? Or some mysterious concept of balance akin the the mystical balance of harmonies in the universe rule by Gaia?

That said, I expect the cues you recommend are fine. I definitely like a smooth cue (glove can help when humid). More crucial is the tip. Very hard to run out when you can't draw a ball.

Hey Silencer, what's wrong with laminated tips? Are you suggesting that a laminated tip is more prone to miscue? I switched away from 1 pce tips some time ago, and currently use Moori's. Please comment. Thanks

I have a Mali cue. I like it, with the exception of the tip. I'm not sure what kind it is but it's the same tip as when I got it new. It doesn't hold chalk very well. I end having to use a tip pik or tapper every 9 or 10 games.

Other than that its a nice cue.

By the way, I have the M-12. I would have posted that earlier but I had to look it up

when i first used moori i miscued alot..must be my stroke maybe not...i guesse it just takes time breaking into

to matt, the M-12 is a hell of a nice looking cue! the black against the almost yellow american cherry forearm, sweet! to top spin, laminated tips have glue throughout, thus you are actually shooting with glue instead of leather hence the crazy fast uneven wear and loads of miscues, i recommend a triangle tip.

Silencer,
Interesting post. Seems based on the criteria you've stated above, that every McDermott I've ever owned, to include my current playing cue, meets your standards. More importantly, they have always met mine. Mali isn't the only maker of good production cues. I've met tons of folks who swear by their Vikings, Muecchis, et. al. My bottom line is that if the cue feels good in your hands, and you can make balls with it, use it.

i use a sniper laminated tip and IMO it works fine and there are just as many miscues if not less than what I had before.

9_ball_slim has caught the correct! You couldnt have said it any better.
