Desire, drive and ability. Obviously we see that Efren still has the desire and ability but he himself has admitted that he doesn't have the drive as much anymore. Efren also feels that his game has slipped. Ever humble.
One thing I didn't see mentioned is the change in equipment and rules. For example, the cloth wasn't as fast, the balls weren't as good, the rails are bouncier. Now the dominant game is one foul nine ball while it used to be 14.1 and two-foul nine ball. These games required different techniques to cope with the equipment and rules of the time.
There are still not many players who want to tangle with Efren or Buddy, young or old so this speaks for itself. To be on top of any game or sport requires the right mix of desire, ability, drive and opportunity. It's tough when any of those things are out of sync and damned hard to maintain them from year to year.
When one gets older things start creaking and that in and of itself is a distraction.
I would gladly trade any future success at pool for my pain-free body of my 20's.
So that's my opinion anyway.
