I hate to be the one to say this but the only way to have people stay tuned into pool on TV is as simple as this: Bar Box 8 ball with casino balls(reds, yellows and a black ball) or 9 ball. JOB's World Bar Box Championships televised format would soar in the ratings.Everyday pool players want to see the experts on the same equipment that they play on everyday/weekend so they can appreciate how good the game came be. That will make people want to improve on their game and sell more products. The reason I say I hate to say it is Im a big table guy all the way and favor straight pool race to 150 or 200. Thats a test of skills for real pool players.:)

A bigger table (9ft) with reds and yellows would be a good idea. But I think too small a table would look tacky...

You have the right Idea Muscleman!

If they would take a film crew to any top tournament and film as much as they can! Then let someone that has picked up a cue before or seen a pool table edit the footage.

Show some good matches, on the way to covering the final 4! Then have a 2 or 3 part show, and show the final 4 matches completely! As good as they have done for covering the poker tournament trail.........you would think they could figure out how to cover pool right! Instead of teasing us with the crap they do now!

The answer for TV Pool

Hi Top Muscle Pool,

Here is an idea. Play each tournament as is currently done. When you reach the final six, change the format to a "Ring Game". Wow, does that have TV potential and, its fast! Pay the participants on a greatly separated schedule like 50% to the winner, 20% for second, 10% for third, 8% for fourth, 7% for fifth and 5% for sixth. This would be a prize fund separate from the rest of the tournament payout. What do you think?

I like the idea of a Televised "Ring Game". Seeing a Ring Game where the players have antied up $5000 a piece, with no way out but by winning the whole thing. Make it a $200 on the "5" & $500 on the "9" game. Tape everything, even the nasty language. Some extreme verbage would have to be edited out.

The small table would look tacky but that's the table that most everyone plays on.We all have raced at the go-cart track but none of us have raced Indy or Daytona. 8-ball should be the game im my opinion everyone knows the game and the 2 colored balls would make it real easy to follow. Im also saying that it would be a real World Champion title gme with all the greats of the game welcome.Barbox at its best with a game thats user friendly.I would like to see a match televised like that even if it were once or twice a year it would still be better than watching the 4 year old trick shots or the Alison and Karen show on "ESPN"(Exact Same Pool Nonstop ). As far as a ring game goes I would want to see a format like the for celebrity poker matches ran for some big charity/money. Gambling at pool is a terrible thing but you take some tight azz rich Ben Afleck guy and put him on tv playing poker and it the coolest thing since the leaher tip.Poker is Soooo exciting to watch on tv I have a hard time deciding between it and the world chess championships.Maybe we could get away with gambling pool on tv with fine suits on and diamond watches like Ben wore. But I want to see him cut the 9 for $5000.00 of his own money....no I guess im off track here I wouldnt watch that if it was on tv.Screw that idea.Hahaha Im just saying try someting different and see if it works.

You've got to get the audience on a personal level with the players. Get them to either like or hate the players in the match. Take poker, for instance. The interviews and the talk around the table gave these players personalities. Who produced that show? THAT is the guy pool needs. People will tune in hoping to see Efren rule the day or to see Earl have his ass kicked. Sponsers will flock. Why do you think people LOVE to see a McCready match? Because it's not just good pool, it's a good show. We need more personalities like Keith. And someone who can properly exploit those personalities. Start doing that, and it'll be much easier to make money in the pool biz.

My $0.02

I like the idea of an 8-ball ring game. And with the reality-TV genre still going strong, maybe now would be a good time for something like this.

Start off with 16 or so players, like Survivor or the other reality shows, then have them eliminate each other. Heck, have them live together for a couple of weeks. Keith McCready would be a perfect participant, given his lingering fame from The Color of Money and his irreverant disposition.

I don't think they need to play with single-colored balls. Striped and solids are distinguishable enough. And even though most people play on 7-ft bar tables, I don't think you lose anything at all by playing on regulation 9-ftrs.

Somebody call the networks!

FastLarry, you seem to have some contacts in the entertainment industry, what do you think?

The answer

For those of you who feel pool needs a "personality".

Last Wednesday evening, Jim Mataya played his only match at the DCC. Some in the crowd thought it one too many. Yes, he was funny. But at whose expense?

Can you imagine Keith winning the US Open and being interviewed by national TV sports news? Keith is a minority shareholder in Budweiser. They were the prime sponsor. Can you see Keith, beer in hand, in a national ad of any kind?

How about Earl on live TV belittling his opponent, the ref or someone in the crowd.

Or Efren sitting in his chair with a big smile and laugh after he misses the match nine ball and loses.

I guess I prefer the latter but, would that bring in a TV audience.

This world is too politically correct for real pool action.Everyone is so worried about walking the straight and narrow it makes me sick sometimes. The industry is so afraid that someone may say something thats off-colored and they forget that THEY are still living off the game that Fatty made famous by woofing nonstop against men, women and children. Fattty always had the audience on his side Kinda like Jimmy,Keith and Earl today right?!Read any artical written by George Fels and you will see what I mean. That guy probably got involved with pool because of Fatty and now all he can do is belittle the guy.....What a great guy to have covering our sport?Geez.
I totaly agree on the 9 foot tables. The catch here is to get people involved in the game,a BarBox and colored balls will simplify the tv viewing and then maybe average folks can learn more and get excited about the game that they play.
Cardiac Kid< Why did Jimmy only play 1 game at DCC? Jimmy is a great champion he was just forced out of the game for speaking his mind and being too much of a showman.....great job once again Fatty, your the man! George who????lahooozer

TMP,

Jimmy originally did not want to play at all. Scott Smith kind of egged him on with the help of the crowd. Scott then cleared the adjacent table for Keith to play his match on. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your viewpoint, Keith did not show up for his match. Jimmy told Scott that he had no intention of winning. He gave his opponent multiple chances to win. When left with a straight in 9 ball six inches from the pocket at 6 to 5, Jimmy turned to the other guy and I believe said, "Donny, looks like I'm going to have to play a billiard shot". He three cushioned the cue ball and just jarred the nine. He was gratious in defeat but, Lyle (JR) Gay wanted part of Jimmy's anatomy right then and there. Yes, it was humorous. But what damage was or could have been done. Jimmy's opponent took it all in stride. Some players would not have!

The last time I played Jimmy I was playing strong and kicked my way out of 3 or 4 safties with 2 and 3 rail hits. Jimmy would say nice shot each time and smile. Finally he came over and said"Im not going to let you beat me out of more than 500.00" well when the smoke cleared he got me for 100.00 I had our picture snapped shaking hands. I still have that picture today. I wanted to have the picture showing me handing him the Ben with a bummed look on my face but his partner wanted no part of that.......Great times.

Pretty Boy Floyd

TMP,

The last time I played Jimmy was at the Cleveland All Around. It was held at the downtown Holiday Inn. Played him 14.1 first thing in the morning. My memory of the event was the line up of Bloody Marys on his sidetable. I do remember him not playing well. I'd heard so much about him from our local players. I guess I expected more. While playing "drunk", I'd give a slight edge to Larry Liscotti. He beat me!

This is what makes people tune in.
People LOVE to see Simon belittle someone on American Idol.
They LOVE to see the jerk voted off the island. Then they miss his antics when he's gone.
People live for something to get mad at.
Look at Rush Limbaugh's ratings.
Hell, look at the length of the posts where people get to trash Fast Larry or The Siliencer.
I aint sayin it's the way it ought to be. It's just the way it is.

Everyone, (including myself) complains about espn's coverage of pool, but any coverage is better than no coverage at all. Lately there has been pool on seemingly every day, i watched two hours of the mosconi cup yesterday, they didn't play with timers which i liked better than the regular timed matches. I liked watching because you could feel the pressure, and you could see players making mistakes that they normally wouldn't.

I agree with top muscle, if you can get people to rally behind someones personality that creates a bigger market of viewers. Earl is one of the top players and a total ***** but that's what people like, abrasive personalities, they will either love him or hate him. Everyones complaining about nine ball, but it fits tv, one thing i cannot stand is hearing guys talking about how they don't play 9 ball for money because it's mainly luck, isn't it funny how none of these guys have the slightest clue how to even play 8 ball, I myself prefer 8 ball because 9 ball has more pressure in it, you only have one ball to shoot at, and most people don't play with shot clocks which puts that much more pressure on you.

If i had my choice i would rather watch snooker on tv than anything else. I have watched some streaming video of the world championships and was throughly impressed, I didn't think that they would be that good. I think the problem here is that pool players are selfish and they want to see specific games on tv that they themselves like playing the most. One pocket would never work, 99% of the population doesn't even know what it is, straight pool is dead, i have played less than 5 times in my entire life, i think 9 ball on tv is fun to watch, 7 ball is way too offensive, the only other options i think would maybe work are some sort of bank pool, most recreational pool players are amazed by one dead bank shot someone makes, let alone someone banking out, i myself am interested in seeing that. I really think the game that people would relate to is 8 ball on a bar box, similar rules as 9 ball. 8 ball on a 9 footer the balls are more spread out and you have less balls to break out, on a bar box theres always something you have to deal with and anything can happen, i couldn't imagine what some of the top pros would do with 8 ball on a bar box, but i know i'd pay to see it.

One thing with pool is it's always going to have a bad reputation, any time you see someone playing pool in a movie or on some tv show they are always playing for something, i have a problem with this, I wonder how many people have been killed over $5 or less pool games, it has to be a lot, hell i've gotten into fights over the 50?? i had up on the table. One of the problems here is knowledge about the game, I will be out playing and someone tells me that i should be on espn playing pool, i just start laughing at them and i try to expain the differences in my skill level and a pros skill level, and it probably just confuses them. Some how the public needs to be more educated about pool, but i don't think this will ever happen, not in my lifetime at least.
