The best shot I saw in Lincoln

It was Karen 4 and Gerda 2 in the Finals, and Gerda had Just played safe on Karen leaving her no real kick option due to the possibility of scracthing in pocket A. Karen grabs her jump cue, and pops it over a wall of balls and banks the 2 ball 2 rails all the way back into the opposite corner. The way she swayed away from the shot after she hit it and visually tracked the ball into the pocket makes me think she was going for it. Absolutely an amazing shot, especially when pulled off in the finals!

I heard a few folks say she grazed the three on this shot but I couldnt see it due to my seat which was right behind her during the shot. Anyone else have an opinion as to whether the three was contacted?

I didn't bother with your WEI board thing (I could never get it to work right ) but, I wonder if ESPN will pick this as the shot of the match, or if they will pick something silly as they normally seem to do. Also maybe we will be able to see if the 3 was contacted on ESPN as well. I assume the 3 allegedly was grazed before the contact with the two, if my assumption is correct did Gerda call it? If not then good hit IMO.

I'd say she was happy getting a legal shot at the 2-ball. I think she tried to leave the 2-ball and the 3-ball in the opposite ends of the table. If she would have wanted to pocket the 2-ball, she would have played it cross corner. Also, she might have tried to place 2-ball behind the group of three balls near the cueball's original position. Now looking at the position.. I think it was a two-way shot with 90% emphasis on the legal hit and 10% on the slight chance of making it 2 rails to the corner. I'd say it's a 1-out-of-10 shot...

Well said, Landshark, ESPN nearly often picks a fluked shot as the shot of the match, and this shot was certainly a fluke.

Your comment about whether Gerda saw a foul doesn't fly with me. As this took place in the final match, it was a televised match, meaning a) there would have been a referee, and b) Gerda would have been sitting quite a fair distance from the pool table, as is always the case in WPBA events.

While I'm sure it was an exciting shot, this was a fluke. I'm not even sure Karen selected the right jump shot. Going directly at the two kept both the bad hit and the scratch into the corner off the two in play. Had Karen jumped and hit the long rail and then the two, she'd eliminate both possibilities. Close choice.

Would love to hear more about the WPBA Nationals. Hope you had a great time.

I agree, but lately the shots they have been picking really aren't that extraordinary. For example, in the Canadian event...Ga Young Kim v. Julie Kelly (I think) the shot of the match was Ga Young having practically a strait in on the 9 in the corner pocket. Ah, I could have made that shot...not that special. I dunno, maybe it was the fact that she got on it, but if that was the case they should have recapped the execution she did to get there, IMO.

I have never played on TV or in a Pro event for that matter, but normally don't you have to warn the ref. first? I have never seen a ref. call a foul that he wasn't asked to watch. No offense to Gerda, but you always watch the table even when your opponent is shooting and no matter how far away you are and if you feel the shot is questionable you always get the ref. to watch it prior to it being executed. If she did not make a fuss about it, then good hit. I'd figure both players would totally be on point, it being the finals and all. If the players/ref. did not call it, then no foul...no matter what anyone else thought the saw. I remember reading somewhere recently about a shot that was questionable during a televised match. ESPN even replayed their tape. Was it a player/ref. that questioned the legality of a hit, or was it a fan in the stands?

I have never seen a ref. call a foul that he wasn't asked to watch. No offense to Gerda, but you always watch the table even when your opponent is shooting and no matter how far away you are and if you feel the shot is questionable you always get the ref. to watch it prior to it being executed.

Landshark, my guess is that I have attended well over 100 mens tournaments live and over 40 WPBA events live over the past twenty eight years of attending pro events. In WPBA play, there is no such thing as getting a referee in a televised match, as the referee is required to officiate every shot. Next time you watch WPBA pool on TV, take note of how far the player chairs are from the TV table. At the BCA Open, it was probably twenty feet, and at WPBA Peoria, it was about the same. Nobody sitting in a player chair in a WPBA TV round match could have a real strong opinion on a hit call unless it was super-obvious. Gerda's failure to comment is of virtually no significance here. I hope you find me informative, for I'm certainly not trying to be argumentative here.

Thanks for posting the shot Gremlin.

I was sitting right behind Gerda, not three feet away, and I couldnt see the shot becasue Karen's rump was pointing right at both of us and the two ball ly in the opposite corner. It is quite possible that the ball could have been grazedwithout Gerda seeing it. Additionally, on a power shot such as this, one tends to focus on the moving balls and not the stationary ones.


After the match, Folks sitting close to the other corner said they thought they saw the three move just a bit as the cue passed it. Karen hit it so hard, It could have been from the windthrow.....

I guess we will have to wait for the match to be aired on TV to know for sure.

No arguement SJM, I have only been to the WPBA events at Valley Forge.
I do find your info informative. The only thing I have to go on really is diffrent non-televised tourneys that are not at a professional level...
