Pay attention to Earl's grip hand and his shaft speed, when he strokes the cue ball.
For the most part every shot seems to be hit with the same "Grip-Twist" or rotation.

You came really see the "GRIP-TWIST" at 18:50 min, when a cue mounted camera is used.

Like many of us of that era, Earl uses the swipe method of applying side spin. He uses side spin a lot which is why you see him twisting his wrist often.

On soft to medium center axis shots, you won't see him twist.

However, he sometimes will twist in his follow-through on power center axis shots. I think this is a habit and obviously has no negative effect on the outcome of the shot.

This was very surprising to me...I knew Earl twisted his cue, but this is the first (very unique!) evidence I've seen of his cue beginning to twist BEFORE the tip contacts the CB (10 ball in this video).

Very cool find!

Twisting the cue may or may not have a negative effect on the accuracy of the stroke for someone like Earl. I wouldn't want to teach that to anyone, as it has no positive effect on the outcome.
