The Break?

Thanks gentlemen for being so generous with your time. I'm beginning to get what is all about, should have my first game (practice) this week and will give you my feedback. I'll also post a picture of the two cues I've brought if your interest?

At the bar and occasionally at league; I use a soft break because most opponents are BAD at breaking clusters and maneuvering the CB around interference, giving me a significant advantage.

Are there leagues that allow soft breaks? I thought they got rid of those like the pro events did.

So your One of those guys that drags Wednesday bar league out to 11pm. Lol.
I go for everything. To Get the shit over with.
If I don't like the player what I do is after break I make my first ball. Then I look for something where I can easily freeze up the cue ball. While calling my ball in an off pocket but still make it. So the only time he gets the table is with the cueball locked up. When I get my ball in hand I'll do the same thing. Get ball in hand again then run out.

Guys love that shit. Makes them want to quit

The league I shoot in the usual winner is the one that gets a second look at the table, if there is one. Its very competitive and can be fun, unless you don't pick up your cue very often, then it can be not so much fun.

Thanks Bob, its really interesting. So now I gather a number of balls have to touch a rail, or pass the middle pockets. So if you can pot the 9 ball from the off, it's game over? And you can also pot it off the ON ball too, if you get a chance.

Think it's going in now, info goes in more slowly when your older however. Very grateful for all your support. and advice.
Sounds like you just need to read the general rules of 9-ball.
Some tournaments have different rules on the break but after that it’s typically always the same.

4 balls hit rails; yet nothing gets above ½ table.

I usually see this in league matches anyway, by accident due to bad breaking and/or racking LOL It's still possible to have a "soft break" not in line with the rules and get the required balls to the rail, it's about the speed of the hit not as much the result. The rules may say 4 balls to a rail is a legal break but there is also a section for soft breaks aside from that, they usually call them "safety breaks" where the balls don't spread much so there is nothing to shoot at.

He's like this all the time. Clicks on and reads stuff under his own free will. Then gets mad he had to read it. Then he has to author apost about being annoyed and will tell you to use the search function
Feel free to put me on Ignore. I'll take it as a compliment. I don't get mad i'm just trying to let a newbie see there's easy ways to find what they're after.

You should treat the break like you would any other shot. Make a ball and control the table. There’s a lot of good advice here and videos. Find something that works for you and practice.
80% of the players that lose do not control the table, nearly all my turns to the table are because my opponent missed a low percentage shot when he should have played safe

On league night I use 2nd ball break. It typically leaves clusters and plays to my game.

Poor racking also gives me the 8 in the side fairly regularly.
