it's simple, trick shots. the average human can't stand to watch pool. they don't understand it, and find it dull. however humans from 5 to 105 years old LOVE trick shots! if some new executive at abc or some major network said hey there are shows on gardening, home improvments, chicken rotesires, jewlery sales, a golf network, who wants to be a millinaire, and other assorted crap, let's try billiard trick shots, why not bubby, why not???

Trick shots are nice for a short time but they get old after a bit. Having Andy Segal (a youngster) competing should help though. A new face adds interest.

I have come to realize that people want to see results in a short period of time and having contests such as the Mosconi Cup would probably be the best way to generate interest. Where points are given to a team.

But the only way pool will ever be watched at any length would be if they legalized betting on the outcome.

Personally, I get sick of trick shots, I prefer competitive matches between good players. Saying trick shots are the fastest way to make pool popular is akin to saying putt-putt is why golf is so popular today.

The way to make pool popular isn't through smoke and mirrors, I've heard everything from colored balls to god knows what on these boards, the same thing that makes your game good is what will make pool popular, a little consistency of coverage. You can't sporadically put pool on T.V. and even then show matches from last year and expect people to get excited about it.

Bernie, that is exactly what I am doing, I am on this, and the new name for this will probably be WAPFT, THE WORLD ARTISTIC POOL FANTASY TOUR, featuring the Magnificent 16, who brings you the pool, show of shows.

It is already booked in China and it's got the support of the IAPA, the support of the top 20 players on Earth who are in to play and the sanction and approval from the BCA and WPA. Somebody soon will pick it up here; it is gong to blow your socks off. When you see an entire program of the top 16 in the world trying to make the world’s toughest masses, force draws and follows, this will showcase pool at its highest fantasy level. It will be the ultimate test of pool skills in any game or competition. There is no smoke or mirrors to this; you will see nothing but skill at the highest level possible.
One of the 16 will be an instant legend in his own time. One will become the Grand Master of Grand Masters, King Kong, the high priest of artistic pool in the world. We will call him simply, '' THE BIG KAHUNA "

This will be 2 to 3 times the skill level of the shots you saw on ESPN trick shot magic. This will now make that show obsolete. That was a good show, but ESPN used it as filler and ran it into the ground, playing the same match over and over until you wanted to scream and tear your hair out.

Our program will be presented in a much better fashion and edited correctly, they like to just film theirs like it is and it goes down doing as little editing as possible saving money but sacrificing quality to the viewer.

All the things you did not like, hopefully we have learned from them and your comments. Our product will have them all corrected and removed. Help is on the way. For those of you who do not care for trick shot shows, maybe this one might change your mind. Paul Gerni designed the current one several years ago; I am designing the new one. Paul and I have always had two entirely different concepts of how this thing should be ran and presented. You won't know which one is best until you see ours a year from now.

I have the advantage of being able to learn from their mistakes, so doing an upgraded show is then fairly simple. Doing the first one is the hardest; going one up on somebody is then easy to do. You just do yours bigger and better which is our plan.

I disagree Silencer. I think the ring game is the way to go. When I saw Parica put on a dazzling display of offensive shots against Archer, the lightning hit me! If they would also allow a little more dialogue between the players, they'd have the formula for TV imho!

I Find trick shots to be boring. I think that a team Event like the mosconi cup could bring pool to the lime light. :D

Yes, we understand, a lot of you older guys feel that way. TV does not do programing for you over 40, 9 ballers.
They are after the younger viewers. Artistic has them, 9 ball does not. Given that TV demographics are youth driven, you are going to be seeing artistic for a long time to come, like it, or not. The youth is the future of this sport, you are it's past. :p

Yes I agree, variety is the spice of life, bring on the ring games, how about some 8 ball as well.

I've noticed that a lot of people in their teens (my age) are pretty brain dead! So I think 9-Ball should be used so that they can understand it.

I find trick shots boring. I think that gambling would bring pool into the light. Although I know alot of people would see that negatively. Also, more interaction between the players.

When the Rashig sets of 9 balls came out, they were only in colors, they failed because the American players could not remember what colors were what numbers, they could not remember the yellow ball is the one ball, how brain dead is that. We cant memorize numbers 1 through 9? How did we ever beat the Indians I must now ask. How in the hell did we ever find the Mississippi river, did somebody get lost and go the wrong direction, west and not east? :D

I agree, bring on the gamblers, bring on the ring games, lets have some fun and some action. I am tired of all this old BS that does not draw flies, which is tournament 9 ball. The greatest pool I ever saw or ever went to was Johnston city, Illinois. Bar none, nothing since then has come close. 40 years has gone by since then.

Those who know, know, those that dont know dont know

Cue ball, that sounds like a quote from yogi Berra. You are watching too many aflac commercials. Watch more trick shot magic and learn something new.

If we have established already you are blind, then how can you see. If you cannot see, how can you know? Pool is full of those who think they know, but don't. When you really do know, what you then know, is that you now know, nothing. You arrive back to where you are now, you know nothing, but that is reality to you now, and you do not know that. What I am gently trying to break to you, is you know nothing. No worries Mate, you have me to explain it all to you.

No one knows as yet what would make the game popular to the masses. If we did, then I wouldn't be making this post.

What would make pool popular to the masses? It is popular to the masses!
Ask 100 N. Americans under 50 if they've played. I'll bet 80% of 'em say yes, and they loved it. What game did they play? Good old stripes and solids.
We need to promote 8ball at the pro tourny level if we want to gain the acceptance of the masses. As Fast so nicely put it, 8ball is the "people's game". Everybody understands it, everybody's played it.

I don't think gambling is the way to go. Most players like to watch the action, but that is only because that is all there is in the game right now. Major corporations in the US will not want to pick up anything that has open gambling. Maybe a foreign corporation would, but the main 9-ball tour is in the US.

I can't watch 9-ball on TV, or in person unless I am friends with one or both of the people playing (personal friends, not just people I have met once or twice).

When you say trick shots are boring, I think that is for two reasons. First, you are a player and as a player, you prefer to watch things that you can do. Not that you can't do trick shots, but you generally play 9-ball, so you like to watch 9-ball. It makes sense. Second, Larry has a point that ESPN plays the same matches over and over again. Unfortunately they don't have a choice. The trick shot magic tournament is filmed once a year. If they had a few tournaments a year, you would see a variety, and it might make it more interesting for you.

I think that trick shots are the way to go if you are trying to appeal to the masses, that is, the non-pool playing public. When I tried my hand on the pro 9-ball tour, I would speak with people who don't play pool and they would always say "I saw pool on TV but I just flipped through the station". They never stayed long enough to say who was playing or describe any of the match. They usually couldn't even tell me whether the guy was old, young, short, tall, etc. I would always ask since I could sometimes figure out who it was. However, with trick shots, it is different. The average non-pool playing person does stop and watch. People would always be able to describe at least some of the match, who was playing. Most people at my office know the name Mike Massey and Dr. Cue, but none of them could name anyone on the 9-ball tour, even though they may get more TV coverage. Even the women aren't remembered, except for Jeanette, but they usually just say "you know, the asian girl with the tight black outfit on".

I am hoping that the new trick shot tour that Larry is setting up will work out. If so, we stand to have multiple tournaments per year, and you will see some amazing shots. The shows throughout the year will be different so you will never be bored.

Also, you mentioned that you liked the Mosconi Cup tournament. I saw some of it. I actually was able to watch because I know Tony Robles very well, and also because it is nice to watch the teamwork. It was exciting because the players were jumping up and down and getting excited as well. This is exactly what happens at every Artistic Tournament. Also, we are going to have a USA vs. World Mingaud Cup tournament. I think it is tentatively scheduled for the end of 2004 and it should be in CT (not sure about the details but I think these are right so far). We should have 6 player teams and a few of the pro women will come down and play in exhibition artistic matches with some of the top artistic pros. It should be a very exciting few days. I am hoping that it gets taped for TV.
