The "GRIP" - Important

Ok, here is a post on a fundamentally important part of your game. The GRIP.

I've been playing a long time and always experiment with various aspects of my game - looking for improvement. I believe this is necessary and you can't be scared to experiment in your search for better results! By experiment I mean, copy what better players do and see if it can click in for you why they do it, and why it works.

Lately, I've been watching some of the better players play - and studying their grip. I made a few observations to myself, and then read something elsewhere, where a certain pro described how they grip the cue. This matched up with my observations, which were - the better players grip with their thumb, middle, and ring finger -- eliminating the index from the equation.

This makes sense to me - being that the index can "steer" the ball if you're having an off day. I've always gripped with my thumb, index, and middle finger. If my game is on, then this is fine....but if I'm off - then I do find myself having quite a few difficulties, and I believe this is in part due to the way I grip the cue.

So, which fingers do you use in your grip. Of course we all strive for a nice loose grip (as possible)......but I'm thinking now it is important to think about which fingers you use. Perhaps this is minutia, but every little piece of knowledge helps - and sometimes I think this is overlooked, but can perhaps make a world of difference? I know I'm going to start experimenting with this new grip and see what happens.

Thoughts?

Hi There

I haven't given it much thought lately Matt. I know that your grip should be comfortable and consistent throughout your stroke. You know the feeling when it just feels and sounds right. I look for that in every shot. It usually takes me a couple racks to hone it in. I will take note of what fingers are where in a few minutes. Ms. P. has been drilling me at 10 ball for several days now. She is probably waiting for me to get off the comp like a fox waiting for a rabbit.:D Have a safe New Year ya hear!

That is very good daniel. Believe it or not, there is a perfect grip. It is just different for everybody.:D
You really want to know what I think of the importance of the GRIP? It is just as important as your BRIDGE, STANCE and STROKE. You put this all together and develope YOUR stroke. This is where you pass ball banger level and really begin your learning process. JMHO

I like your cue butt!

The grip is so often overlooked in discussion, but is equal in importance to the other areas you mention Don.

I admit, when I'm playing my best I don't even think about it --- but when I'm playing bad, I try to figure out what exactly is causing it, and what can I change to boost my confidence and improve my game.

Often I feel it is my grip.
