The love of a good pool hall

daydreaming about pool

So last night I walk into the local pool hall (Hollywood Billiards in South Florida) and I'll be damned if there wasnt a room full of worldbeaters in there. Dennis Hatch, Sparky Ferrell, Pamela Treadway, John Ditoro, James Ladeira, John "Monster John" Rouse and more. The handicapped $15 tourny last night had 29 people (small field for Hollywood which usually gets above 32) and I would say 1/3 of the field were A players and above. The room was buzzing since Sparky and James matched up for some 4 ahead one pocket and there had been talk that there could be more players coming. (none did).

Hollywood has been seeing a fair amount of road agents coming through lately. The room is blessed with a stake horse who puts the locals in the box alot. Plus the room has good food and a large group of guys who match up and play 9ball, 1p and golf. The 6x12 golf table last night had a six man game going still at 1:30 when I left.

I just love a pool room where there are so many players that want to play competitive pool. When I was in school at Cal Berkeley and didnt have a car to travel, I was cursed at the time with the exact opposite, a room full of bangers that really only played 8 and nine ball. It was terrible and I rarely played much serious pool during those years.

How many AZer's have a room like Hollywood Billiards? Tell us about it.

Hard Times

Hardtimes in Bellflower California was like that when I lived in California 1988-1992. I haven't been back but often wonder if it is still like it was back then. It was a true players room with lots of action and tournaments. Man I miss those days.

Kevin, if you remember Hardtimes from that era then you remember The Stagger Inn just down the road. Maybe 15-20 bar boxes. Open all night after the full bar closed at two. Hawaiian Jimmy, Tony, Underdog,Chicken George, Calvin. I can't remember more right now. No world beaters but truly a degenerate crew. Those were the days.

Tacony Billiards In Northeast Philly is like that. Or was, I haven't been there since it was sold to new owners.

The previous owner was one gambling person. Back pocket 9-ball, one-pocket, and for lots of jelly beans. Mike LeBron was known to bring in the top Filipino players at any time. I remember putting down my cue one time to watch Francisco Bustamente run 3 racks of rotation.

There were plenty of good local players, too. There used to be bleachers in the front where you could sit down and watch any of the matches being played, but I heard they were being thinned out. Good food and a full bar, too.

Hall Of Fame Billiards in Warren Mi has some pretty good players on a regular basis, Binion,Smith,Ashcraft,Wiseman plus most road players have visited us .
It is not uncommon to get 50+ entries in monday handicap tourney,or 40 in our thursday open. Good to see other rooms generating good fields also!

Are you affiliated with HOF? Nice room, if so. I used to stop in there some times after work since I worked just up on 18 mile. Of all the rooms I've been to (which admittedly isn't many), HOF did the greatest job of serving alcohol, having a full selection bar, but keeping the joint about pool. It's definitely a pool hall that serves liquor as opposed to a bar with pool tables, if that makes any sense. It's very important to an alcoholic that's picky about pool, like me. :)

Isnt Hall of Fame the place that is owned by the guy who won the lottery?

As I recall that was an interesting story..powerball winner opens kickass room with winnings.

Anyone know the room in Tulsa that has alot of these young guns coming out of?

There was a group of like 6 of them, including Mark Hatch, Blair T. and a few more gals. Didnt see anyone that fit that description.

I've played there many times and always seemed to have no problem finding a game.

For me its about who I see there, not the action or the pool room. Its always a pleasure to watch Monster John play, I also felt like I was 20 again with the Hatch's present...we go back decades. Uwate, all the usual suspects really werent there last night...I wonder why?

The Monday night tournament at Mr. Cues in Atlanta was pretty star studded. Monica and Helena, Sarah Rousey, Cliff Joyner and Alice Rim was playing a money match on the side. And then you have Stevie Moore tending bar!
