Honest to God this isn't vanity speaking but since 1969 I've never seen a rotation player that I couldn't beat. My one step beyond self speak when I approach the table is the reason why.
There shouldn't be any excuses for missing except " I addressed that ball incorrectly, I won't do that again."
There are 2 other legitimate excuses and they should only happen once.
They are;
1./ Because the table drifted off, sometimes a lot.
2./ The ball skidded, this happens when there's either moisture or a little dirt on the object ball and you shoot pretty easy with inside english to kill the cueball.
What happens is the moisture or dirt grabs the inside english spin and even though the object ball was struck at the correct spot the spin has more effect than the hit and throws the object ball in the opposite direction of the inside english.
An example of the skid would be if you're cutting the object ball (1 ball) that's 2" off the left long rail between the side and corner pocket and the cueball is 6" or so off the same rail in the middle of the table.
The 2 ball is closer to the side pocket and an inch or 2 off the same rail, in fact it's just a few inches left of the cueball. This 2 ball only goes into the opposite corner pocket and you don't want an angle on it you want to get straight in.
So you want to hit the cueball w low right english, make the 1 ball in the corner and kill the cueball so that after it hits the rail it will have spin on it to keep it there.
When the 1 ball takes the spin instead of the hit it gets thrown left into the rail and causes a miss. The best thing about both of these excuses is they can be cured quickly.
If it was dirt on the object ball then clean them all. If the table is dirty and keeps getting dirt on the object balls then the cure is the same for both excuses.
Play position for longer angles and shoot firm every shot, a table that rolls off, has moisture or dirt on the balls can't influence a shot that's been struck hard enough.
ENGLISH;
I understand someone is telling people to use back hand english when they want to put inside english on the ball.
This is so wrong. BACK HAND ENGLISH IS TERRIBLE TO USE.
Waldemir Markt an excellent player from West Germany took a free lesson from me when I was over there in 1993. I liked Waldy a lot.
He'd been watching me play and wanted a lesson on the correct way to aim with inside english because he'd been taught to use back hand english.
He would either miss 50% of the time or put too much or too little english on the cueball.
IT'S MUCH EASIER THAN YOU'VE EVER IMAGINED TO USE INSIDE ENGLISH;
Let's say you've already decided you want to hit the object ball that you're cutting left with high inside english @ 10 o'clock on the cueball.
1./ Point at the object ball straight in where the contact point is.
2./ Point at the object ball where 10 o'clock is from that contact point.
3./ Address the cueball just as if you were hitting the object ball with no english.
4./ Swing down on that same correct path and aim your tip on the cueball @ 10 o'clock.
5./ When you swing down now you should be pointing that same tip @ 10 o'clock on the object ball, the contact point stays the same only now you're aiming with 10 o'clock english at 10 o'clock on the object ball.
At first it'll look like you're hitting the object ball too full, don't let that throw you just do what I said and shooting with inside english can become extremely easy to do.
Want to cut the ball left with 1 tip left of center english, then just aim your tip 1 tip left of center on the cueball @1 tip left of center on the object ball.
This should help amateurs and pros alike. When I see pros overcutting balls when they use inside english I want to teach them how easy it cen be but I might draw them and get beat with my own stuff.
It's already happened too many times since I first put my videos now in DVD format on the market. If you don't have them please go to my site and buy them for 80% below retail.
The Mind Game. Part 2
My first inning;
1./ Walk briskly study the table in this situation all the balls are on the table, look for problem balls before you do anything else make sure you know that all the pockets are open to all the balls or if they're not.
2./ Ask yourself the question. Where do I want to be on the two to get to the correct side of the three to get to the correct side of the four. Remember this is before you shoot the 1 ball.
3./ Place your hand on the table where you want to be on the 2 ball and if it's at the other end of the table and there are some balls you have to go past to get to it, check out what it looks like above it or past it.
4./ If it's a difficult shot and you're not exactly sure where to hit it, point at the 1 ball cp (contact point) and keeping your eye on that cp walk back to the cueball and let's say where you just pointed is 1/2 inch right of the left edge on the object ball.
Then address that cueball like you could see through it and line it up while still in the address position with 1/2 inch left of the right edge of the cueball meeting the 1 ball and they are both going straight in the pocket. EXACT EQUAL OPPOSITES.
5./ Play air pool stroking the cue in the air trying to get the feel for the speed necessary to execute this shot. VISUALIZE THE SHOT JUST AS IF IT WERE ALREADY AN ACCOMPLISHED FACT.
In this visualization I want you to see yourself keeping your head down to a count of one thousand two thousand three thousand after the shot is over.
In the event of a miss I want you to keep your head down until all the balls stop rolling.
Keeping your head down like that will change your balance after 3 weeks and you'll be going with the shot, miss will be a girl and you can always be proud of the way you played.
Not staying down tells me someone wants to get away from the table and doesn't want to keep it.
Mechanical vs. Fast and Loose;
All my life I've used 2 styles, the fast and loose is far more entertaining and fun, the slow and methodical (Mechanical) is for very tough tables and requires dead aim.
For this lesson we're going to pretend this table is a little forgiving and play fast and loose.
6./ Swing down on that cueball towards the object ball like a falcon on a squirrel, then talk to yourself while stroking fast and loose "okay Jimmy relax and get comfortable" (it's impossible for pressure situations to effect the outcome if your body is relaxed, so is your mind).
Take dead aim stopping once with the grip pressure you've decided to shoot with, then stroking fast and loose again stop twice asking yourself "okay is that where I want to hit it?" YES.
Then after stroking fast and loose with the same pressure in your grip hand that you intend to shoot with.
Then stop with the tip at the cueball, look at the object ball and deliver the shot without changing your grip pressure, keeping your head down to a 3 count.
After doing these steps for a few weeks your game will improve a ton.
Note:
After forcing myself to do these steps every shot pretty soon if I'm gambling or just playing a lot every day, after I swing down all I have to do is say to myself "OKAY JIMMY RELAX AND GET COMFORTABLE THEN STROKE IT UNTIL IT FEELS PERFECT."
Hope this helped. Happy Holidays Everybody
