Decades ago before the advent of super glue, the second or backup shaft was important, but eversince I started using super glue to install tips, I have never had a tip come off.

When was the last time that you actually needed to use your second shaft for the reason that the primary shaft failed?

What do you mean "second"? Sometimes I get out the 5th or 13th shaft if the first or second give me trouble or talk back to me ;)

The warning sign of a bad tip that may pop off, is usually a clicking noise. I've re-tipped many shafts and when there is blue chalk between the tip and ferrule, you get the clicking. The old Tweeten's glue did a superb job in it's day, but you had to pay attention to what you're doing. A cheap tip job, you get exactly what you pay for. I use Locktite professional superglue and the tips never come off.

‘Murphy’s Law’. The best way to insure that you’ll never need a spare, is to actually have one. The surest way to need one, is to not have it.

I heard someone say that the chances of a bomb being on a plane are a million to one, the chances of two bombs is a million million to one, so your best chances it so bring your own bomb along.
