The OB-1 Cue Shaft: My Thoughts. My Views.

Just like Predator’s 314, there is no need to compensate for deflection or squirt when using the OB-1 cue shaft. Of course, one still has to contend with the physics of the throw imparted on the object ball. But all in all, you just point, shoot, and the cue ball goes where you aim it! And I didn’t have to hit the cue ball as hard to get the same effect on spin and all, thus, increasing my accuracy and level of play! I pocket balls and realize my desired positional plays with much less effort than before! The cue ball follows, draws, and spins with much less effort! And this is very important if you play like me, i.e., for hours on end everyday!

I'm glad it improves your game, but I don't believe either the Predator or the OB-1 are squirtless or increase spin. I used Predators for years and had to compensate for squirt on every sidespin shot. My own custom shafts are lower squirt than either the Predator or the OB-1, but I still have to compensate for squirt. And I haven't been able to detect any difference in the amount of spin produced for a given tip offset with any shaft.

I think these effects are either illusions or the result of paying closer attention with your new shaft. But, again, I'm glad it improves your game, for whatever reason.

It was made by Ed Young (Dave Kersenbrock's associate) here in Chicago to my specifications. It has a 10mm tip (like a snooker tip) with a 1/4" ferrule, a conical taper from tip to joint (for stiffness), and is hollowed out for 6-8" at the tip.

I've tested it against other cues (Predators, OB-1s, etc.) using a few different squirt tests. The easiest is the one I describe in this "Simple Squirt Test" thread:

My purpose in having a shaft like this made was to (1) see more accurately where I hit the CB and (2) produce as little squirt as possible.

Lots of people think there must be other effects, which are not true:

- It doesn't produce more spin for a given tip offset.

- It isn't harder to control spin (it's easier because I see more accurately where I'm hitting the CB).

- It isn't less forgiving for slightly offcenter hits (this is affected by tip curvature, not tip width).
