Playing in tournaments and gambling are good ways to meet pool players. Not a very diverse crowd, but the game certainly has its gems and its slimebags both.

Playing in a pool league can be a good way to meet a wider variety of people. Really I'd only recommend it if you find an in-house league at a very well-attended room; otherwise you're only going to encounter a very narrow cross-section of the population.

I don't know about "great", but it is one way to meet people, yes. This reminds me of PocketPoint's old threads. Are you PP reincarnated perchance?

i have used the apa twice to meet new people when i moved to new areas. in the 90's when i moved to ft. lauderdale and in 07 when i moved here to atlanta. i have met some really good people through pool leagues and met some real dicks. but that's what's out there in all walks of life. being it's a pool league and we're all playing i just know we have at least one thing in common and makes new conversations easy to start.

Works for me, but I enjoy it for the fun that it's suppose to be. Once in a while, I'll swing by and chat with people that I've known a majority of the 7 years since I started league.

Other than league, I really don't go far to play pool after putting in my 40 hours during the work week. I walk to and from 25c barboxes and cheap beer n whiskey. So league, for me, is a way of getting out, going to places I normally wouldn't and playing people that I normally wouldn't. I also stop by the bar when other league teams are there, figuring it'll be a better chance to have a racker.. err.. I mean, an opponent.

I agree Evil. There is a very diverse crowd here in Atl. I actually met my gf through league play a year and a half ago.

Absolutely, I am not big on leagues but I think they help pool.
I live in a pool world,if my phone rings..Its a pool player 90% of the time.Pool is my social life

Thanks to everyone that participated in the thread.

It was insightful and realistic.

Pool leagues are an EXCELLENT way to meet people, especially if your in business. Very productive, and a lot less stuffy than attending chamber of commerce events...plus you get to play pool and enjoy your prospecting time as well.

I owned a real estate franchise for a decade before the market tanked...I used to leave the office at noon on pool night and go practice b4 league...

I sold about 4 houses a year directly for pool players I met there so it justified my leaving the office :-)

So...YES, it works !!!

If pool is your passion I think its best to just play in the area pool hall, bar and local tournaments that way you learn the people and places that are the good, bad and the ugly.

Jumping into a league without knowing the area is definitely hit or miss.

Just play pool the people will find you.

I have noticed the better you get the more you will learn about the people who approach you for "friendly or cheap" games (meaning people who try to take advantage).

I would say its a good way of exposing yourself to more people. I have met a few acquaintances by playing pool that otherwise i probably wouldnt have met. Joining the league i have been to places (Bars, Pubs, Social Clubs) that i probably would have not went if not for the pool league. I also found it to be a good ice breaker for chatting up people at bars and pubs. Again that otherwise i probably wouldnt have talked to, been the great social butterfly that I am.;) A acquaintance of mine met his fiance on his pool team, a nice sweet but fun girl 2 years ago. I dont know if you will meet your best amigo or your dream girl, but as a ice breaker and to make a few acquaintances then yes its a good way.

I met my wife while playing pool. She didn't play, but got dragged to a bar by a girl friend...but in those days the only way to meet ME was to look in a pool room.;)

I often go to completely new and unknown places, and the first thing I always do is check out the pool scene. When you don't know the language or the culture, it's nice to have an anchor hobby such as pool in order to root yourself into a new place. It works in every country.

Leagues are a great way to meet folks. Just like in life, you are going to meet some good folks, and not so good. It's the way I have met most folks I play with now. Either they played league, or someone they knew played in one. I would guess I know 95% of the folks that frequent the 9 foot room in my local hall.
