Do you know what bridge I am refering too? It's an open bridge but with the Middle and Ring finger tucked in.

When you go to a Hard rock concert, you get guys putting up their hands with the Pinky, index and thumb out, I think its also a peace sign or sometimes called the devil's horns.

I see player's like Archer, Duel, Yang, Soquet and other pro players using this bridge, an instructor told me it's a bad bridge. What do you guys think? Is it a unstable bridge? What makes it so bad?

as long as your bridge is steady & is comfortable to you, what's the problem?

Just tell your instructor that you've found a better bridge, then just make a fist & let the cue slide through your 1st & 2nd knuckle.

Let us know how he likes that one.

I like that bridge when shooting from the edge of the table. Put the pinky and index fingers on top of the rail, and the middle and ring fingers pressed hard against the side of the rail. Makes for a very stable bridge that way.

seriously though

I'm not sure if the that poster was joking or not.

What he is referring to is actually known as the "fist bridge". It can be used in very
tight places, where nothing else seems to fit in a congested area on the table.

yeah, it was a little joke, but my point is that no matter what your bridge looks like, if it's stable & and comfortable, then use it.

the thing about tucking one or two of your middle fingers under is it steadies the hand. with a finger tucked under there you can made a higher bridge say for centre ball while still pressing the whole of your bridge hand down on the table.

A good instructor won't tell you that it is a bad bridge. A good instructor will explain why it is a bad bridge. To me, this is a good bridge, because it is really stable.

When I think of "fist bridge," it's not an open bridge. It's a bridge the billiard players use with a loop over with no middle finger under the stick. Normally when I see it or use it, it gets the cuestick lower than any other bridge.

Please oh please let's not call this the rock concert bridge or anything like that. It's the "I love you" bridge if you tuck both the middle and ring fingers. It's the "I hate you" bridge, if you only tuck the ring finger. j/k

The finger tuck (one or two) is so common that it's almost the standard open bridge for half the top players.

The beauty of it is that if you need to transition to a raised or jacked up bridge, the tucked fingers are already in the ready position.

Maybe your instructor just thinks your bridge is unstable? Your palm should still be on the bed with this bridge, unless you're forced to jack it up.

Fred <~~~ loves the "I hate you" bridge

Tell Travis it's the bridge you prefer!

Let's call it the "Glen Danzig" bridge :D

I switched to that bridge about 6 months ago after watching some of the best players in the world use it. Seems to work fine to me.

I've gone full circle where when I first started playing pool it was all open bridge, and then I went to a closed bridge for a decade, and now I'm back to an open bridge. Personally, multiple bridges and being comfortable with them is the way to go.
