The smoking issue

My 2 cents

I'm a non-smoker and I think smokers are wimps sucking on a filtered end of a cigarette.
I've smoked at least 4 poolhall's a week since I was 13 pure unfiltered second hand smoke.
Yes, I personally would like to see smoke free rooms due visine eyes, smokey clothes, not to mention health reasons(I living longer to play more pool).
Grady I suggest you conducting a Poll here on AZ from real pool shooters and see what the percentages really are and not getting your info from a tobacco company or the census bureau.

The game has changed alot over the years and so have the people.

Hey that smoking ban is probably going to really kill you if there is another hall close that allows it. If not give it some time. when Illinois went to non smoking it really killed late night business at some establishments. But after about 6 mo people came back and smoked outside. If they like your establishment they'll be back. And you can acquire more non smoking business as well now. The real problem for your future is that not as many new players are playing pool now. At least not around here. The two halls by me are out of business because they had a lack of customers. you know playing pool is a bit too hard for the younger generation when usually all they have to do it point and click. If it bothers you that much just move down the road.

Time for the rant
By the way that smoking ban is retarded. Sorry that politician got in trouble for that Of all the people I talk to only 10-20 percent of them even care about smoking in facilities. So 20-30% smoke 50-60% don't care, Why not push for nonsmoking by giving tax cuts and leaving businesses a choice. . In the case of Ohio they may "love" it but did they really care about it until it happened? .
It takes 60 % to give us dying smokers health insurance. Even 20% +half of those that dont care doesn't equal 60. If the government really cared about our health they would strengthen health care and just make smoking illegal. Maybe that 20% should focus on government reform instead. A little food for thought.
Have fun in the smog this summer:)

hmmm

This issue has little to do with selling beer and pot to minors. The laws on that have not changed. What has changed are the rules which bar and pool room owners are required to follow. How can the govt. say its ok to invest your life in a business, and then change its mind overnight? I equate this more with something along the lines of: "Ok, from now on....no more fast food, no more liquor, and no more pornography." Sorry, but there have been too many rape incidents this year, and drunk driving is on the rise. Besides, alcohol is bad for you. No longer will the public be forced to smell your second hand, stinky breath. And oh yeah, red meat is also bad for you....so no more of that. See, we figured all this out. Here, look at this study done by xyz. Supermarkets, starting today you may only sell organic products. One last thing: Since unemployment is up, from now on only documented workers are allowed to work in kitchens.

So to all of you restaurant owners, butchers, porn dealers, liquor distributors, and food vendors: We know we said it was ok for you to do this. We know you have invested your entire life in this trade. We know you own the building personally and all, and have been a law abiding tax payer for years now. However, we the govt. feel that you are too stupid to make your own decisions regarding your life and your business. So, we have made these decisions for you. Don't like it? Tough toenails, the great Oz has spoken.

Its one thing to grandfather a clause in for new business owners, that I could understand. It's another thing to take away the rights which small business owners have always enjoyed, and based their lives on.

Boo freaking Hoo..... Yeah, stuff changes for everyone. Those who adapt survive, those who don't wine about the big bad government. Yeah, and who made the decisions for your employees who have to work in the smoke filled environment?? You don't give two craps about their health as long as you can make a buck. Amazing that all the pool halls didn't lose any business in IL. What, is everyone going to stay home and drink alone??

It's bad enough the violent control-freaks do their violence, but then to mock the victims on top of it??!!

Give me smokers in my room any day vs. guys like this!

Why so much hate, man?

Grady keep fighting the Smoking Czars

Grady,
I met you years back at the Toledo Hi Cue Billiards on Monroe Street. You and Allison Fisher were doing an exposition. Your manner and behavior was very much the gentlemen. I have a couple of your tapes, also excellent.

I also frequented Glass City Billiards up until the owner Marty [sic] Sawka passed away. Because of his size, Marty requested that I attend the Anti Smoking Ban meetings for him. I once did an news interview that was shown locally.

A head of the Anti Smoking Ban Organization is Bill, of D****'s Lounge. Since then, I have established a friendship with him. He has fought this tooth and nail.

I love spending all my money on attorneys to fight the smoking ban, as I don't have the hobbies of a boat, drink or mistress.
Bill

There seems to be a lull in the non smoking advocates lately. In league play, it is common to see smoking everywhere. So all you Smoking Czars can hop on that if you like. I bet it is OK to smoke that other smoke-able product.

I have posted on this issue before.

This is a Conservative issue about property rights. Selling a legal substance in a tax paying establishment is a closely held personal right. The right of a customer to force a business to take a loss is criminal.

Grady is there a relocation plan in the works? That is an establishment just outside the borders you describe in your post? Businesses just north of the Ohio Michigan line do a land office business.

PM me if you would like a contact to find out our alternatives.

Private Property Rights

A pool hall is private property with something called property rights. Tobacco is a legal substance. Taxes are paid to the government to sell tobacco. No one forces anyone into an establishment that has a poor environment. Anyone can bring their cash and support either a smoking place or a non smoking place. Let the capitalist system work.

The system so far is, I don't like smoke, I think it damages third parties, therefore lets stop others use of a legal product. Lets stop it in a restaurant, bar, public building, car, bus, train, airplane, too close to a door, ... or in your own home.

Contrast this to, I don't like smoke, I think it damages third parties, therefore I will not support establishments that have smoke particulates. I will spent my dollars elsewhere. If enough people agree with me, then, smokeless places will thrive as will smoke places on a proportional basis.

How about making tobacco illegal. Go ahead and put those companies out of business and eliminate the tax base. Tobacco would proceed to be illegal and its price would climb like other black market products. It would also obtain a cool acceptance by the culture similar to other smoke-able substances.

And, I do not, have never and do not intend to smoke.
