When "The Strickland Story" first aired in late 2013, the documentary was discussed with great passion intensity...no surprise, given the subject matter. In no way am I familiar with Earl Strickland the way many of you are. But, as someone who has blogged, to date, about 80+ billiards movies, short films and TV episodes, I thought I would add my opinions to the lot.

Here is my review of "The Strickland Story": http://www.billiardsmovies.com/billiards-documentary/strickland-story/

And if you haven't yet watched it, please stop what you're doing and watch the film. It is a fascinating 45 minutes.

Thanks for the link to your review and the film..........

I like Earl for his talent; but I am put off by his crazy antics.....(not that I think I am unique in that respect). I've said it before; you might not like Earl, but no one who knows pool, has eyes, and a good working brain, can deny his talent. From the first time I ever saw him play in person, (it was back in the '80s at a Reno Sands Open tournament and then at Caesar's Tahoe), I thought his style of shooting and play was as perfect as you would imagine someone to play the game. I saw a lot of pros shooting in those tournaments, but something set Earl apart. In short, a real "natural".....or somebody who seemed like he was born to play pool.

It is great! I love Earl, he's one of a kind!

I agree with everything you posted. I like watching any of the many matches between Earl and Efren because I'm guaranteed to witness some spectacular pool playing and I have never seen Earl display poor sportsmanship in a match against Efren.

thank you very much for posting this...I just finished watching and am a little surprised there was no mention of his winning the $1 million challenge...but it is a great story and well done. everyone agrees there is only one earl and he will never be repeated. he is my favorite player and I think I have seen every one of his matches on utube etc. I put him on my bucket list for a lesson too.

Still going....

What a talent he is. If he could just stop some of the distasteful out bursts he displays all to often when things don't go his way. Is it also "sharking"? Any way, he is one of a kind and I think he is probably the best to ever play 9 ball if we go by tournament titles. The way he is playing makes me think his story is not over. He shoots so darn good and I think he has the best stroke in pool. I watched his story and it is a story I will watch again. Pool definitely appears to be the most important thing in his life.

I Wish

In the beginning of the interview it was mentioned that Earl is Bi-Polar. This is a disease and should be recognized as such. Earl is a great player and I am sure a great person in heart. While I enjoy Earl playing I do not enjoy his antics and sometimes folks are not tolerant of his behavior.

Having said that I wish Earl would come out and admit he is Bi-Polar and be done with it!

Your Thoughts

Thanks

Wedge

You ever been court side for an NBA basketball game. Many of these guys bark more at their opponents, and michael Jordan could give the orange crush to earl, and no body ever hammered him for his trash talk on the court,,,,he was relentless and had no mercy. He would make earl blush.

There is a difference between trash talking to demonstrate to your opponent that you are on a higher level than he is and whining about things not going your way. As much as I love Earl, he is most vocal when things aren't going his way and it mostly comes off as him whining about how lucky the other person is or how unlucky he is.

Could be

Maybe he is bi-polar and if he is I hope he can get help to deal with it. He never seems to be bi-polar when he plays Reyes, just saying.....I still love watching him play as there is only one Earl.
