the Toughest Table in Illinois?

Here's a short video I made in response to the many YouTube posters that asked how big our table is, how tight the pockets are, etc. It shows just how difficult the pockets are, as well as some measurements. Enjoy and please comment!

That's tight as hell. I thought playing on the 4.25" pockets here was tough enough.

Hehe, yeah, that's the same thing I said when we first put the 2.25" balls down on the felt after finishing the table build. Most players get frustrated with it real quick. After a while, though, you start to fall in love with this table. She's beautiful but deadly.

I'll probably have another new video posted tonight, probably some highlights of snooker games we played over the weekend on this table. Be sure to check out my other videos that feature this table (and a few others).

There is such a thing as "too tight" in my opinion. Personally, I like "tight but fair", but to each his own. :)

true, but...

"Fair" is one of those words that no one agrees on.

Yes, "fair" is subjective, but I use "fair" to mean that a ball can be pocketed down the rail with pace if it's struck accurately.

If you watch the video, you can see at around 0:40 that a ball rattled out when accurately rolled slowly down the cushion. Does anyone really consider that a "fair" playing pocket? I concede that I don't play snooker so maybe that is "normal"; I don't know.

It's certainly not a fair playing table in that sense; I guess we're somewhat masochistic. A ball down the rail has to be hit with pocket speed to drop on this table. It's enough to drive you mad when you need to move the cueball a ways.

However, there are at least two reasons for which I've come to appreciate the extremely difficult combination of the 2.25" ball on this snooker table... One, balls that aren't on a rail are certainly pocketable with speed, but there is *very* little room for aim/hit error. Two, a ball that is on the rail with seemingly impossible shape down-table tends to make you either bank it, practice perfect pocket speed & pocketing english, or do something else (and we love bank pool!).

Cool, thanks for not being annoyed at my post. :)

I've always wondered, how does the pool ball on a snooker table affect banking? It seems like it would affect the both the speed and angle of rebound as well as possibly causing the ball to jump from climbing up the cushion. Do these factors come into play heavily or is it hardly noticeable?

Hehe... Almost everyone that comes to shoot on this table, at some point gets a tough down-the-rail shot, misses it, and then makes basically the same statement you made. :) And besides that, it's pretty damn hard to annoy me anyhow, especially with mere ASCII text.

The larger ball certainly can and does hop off the rail nose if you give it enough speed. Yes, it must have an effect on the rebound angle and speed (besides the vertical component), although I can't perceive it much if at all. Overall it banks pretty nicely.

Cool, that is nice to know. :) Cheers!

I can't really see why you would want a table that tight. It takes away your ability ot play certain shots, and changes the game. I would rather have fairly tight pockets, and use pocket reducers if I want to work on pockets that tight. Then at least you could have a regular table if you wanted to.

The Impossible Snooker Table

I played some GOLF with regular pool balls on a snooker table with about 3.5 inch pockets, once.

If the angle was too thin, I'd try to bank them in. Those tables play super fast. I remember waiting for the CB to stop rolling, and it would just keep rolling.

Hehe yeah, I know the feeling! ;-) Golf is a great game for this table/ball setup; we play it every once in a while.

That's certainly one way to go...I've never actually shot on a table with pocket reducers (that I know of). We've come to appreciate our tough table for reasons stated earlier in the thread.

pocket enlargers

Since it's technically a snooker table, I suppose you could look at it as the pool balls effectively being like pocket reducers, and if you ever had the urge to use bigger pockets you could play with snooker balls.

I can't imagine trying to cut a ball down there rail. I would probably elect to cross bank every ball on the rail.

That's what usually ends up happening...unless it's close to the pocket.

I should have some new videos on this table coming in a day or two...this time with balls actually dropping in the pockets! What a concept! Hehe.... Plus I just got Adobe AfterEffects, so expect some increased production value!

New videos probably tomorrow night or early in the week. I'm having trouble deciding just what aftereffects to feature! There's too many cool ones!

P.S. - Brian Gregg, call me bro...
