The weight bolt in a Meucci cue...?

Does it actually hold anything together or can the cue be played without it?
I'm just trying to find out if I can lighten it up an oz and a half and play without it or I need a bolt in it.
I appreciate your knowledgeable replies.
It's an older rempe 5 with a bolt that weighs about 1.5oz.
I see that bolts can be had that weigh as little as .5 but am curious as to it's necessity.
Thanks!
Also, I've never seen a fiddleback shaft like this one has...NICE! :-)

The last one I had, had about 4 weights in it, one behind the other. I have played with them all out, in, and every combination you can think of.
It won't hurt a thing. If it feels good, do it! :)

It is hard to say for certain, since the cue was made in the 1980's. But unless the butt cap is already lose removing the weight bolt will not hurt anything.

It does not hold anything together. Keep it in, take it out, change to a different one. The only two things it will do is change the balance, and change the overall weight.

meucci weight bolts arent really bolts at all.. they are just the threaded part of the bold with a allan or hex end on it.. its basically just a threaded weight..

Great!

I was hoping that it didn't 'hold everything together' and that I wouldn't have people amazed at my '4 piece Meucci' when it came apart whilst playin' some hot chick.
Thanks for the confirmation!

I might be talking out my a$$, or I may have been the victim of Meucci's quality control department, but on a Meucci Originals cue I had, the weight bolt was a wide slotted bolt and seemed to actually hold on the butt cap.
I would either proceed with caution, or maybe give Ryan at Rat Cues a call. He posts on here, and only after going through a 14 month nightmare with the Meucci repair department did I learn about him. Most on here refer Meucci repair questions and work to him.

You might be careful though

because some weight bolts are glued in. Be sure to check before you try to take it out...

And it's not even an allen or a hex-just a beefy ol' standard with a swipe of red sumpinorother across the top which I guess indicated the bolt weight when assembling

Glad to see yours came out without incident. Hopefully you find the weight/feel you were after and enjoy it!

Oy!
Little late for ^^^that^^^. I did give it a pretty good twist to break it free.
There is a little adhesive residue on the bolt.
So I guess there is still some question as no one seems 100% on it. ( see Manwon's post as to age and all )
I've not yet played with it out so I guess the worst I can hear is "PUT IT BACK OR IT WILL COME APART!"
Here's a shot showing the shaft wood I so like!

wow.. must be really different for the older meucci cues, i had a couple originals and the 95+ models all had the bolts that looked like these

Firstly, never sell that cue.

Secondly, in those years there were a couple of different styles of weight bolts as any cue mechanic can tell you. Some of them if you took it out the butt cap would fall off. Some are epoxied in and need heat to remove.

If someone is telling you they have a Meucci that they can remove the weight bolt at will, it may not be of your vintage.

Freddie <~~~ butt fell off

Yes on all counts ! My Second Meucci was the slotted flat head that absolutely held he butt together. And Meuller's did the repair in it.

Bolt

If you are really worried, try to find a plastic or aluminum bolt to replace the one you took out. I did that for an old Joss.

Excellent suggestion.
I did do the unthinkable and played it Friday night. REALLY nice hit and feel to it. Very happy with it compared to a Joss I tried not long ago. I just like like 'em lighter I guess.
It didn't fall apart but I didn't do anything with it that might have jarred any epoxy lingering around the bolt hole, either.
I'm owed 8 beers ( out of ten games ) the next time I play with the friend I shot with.
