The ZAN Premier tip???

Nah.....better read up on that before making opinion based statements and making them sound as if they're factual.

OK you got me.... oh well it was late and I swapped boar with hog... Boars run wild and hogs usually refer to LARGE pigs... However pig is usually used to refer to the domesticated version. If you want to split hairs boars can also refer to uncircumcised male pigs... As a non pig breeder all I can do is try and remember these things from readings but you may interject anything you may know from experience...

As far as it having higher elasticity than cow or buffalo... That one I will just have to stick to... That one comes from testing different leathers and tips over the past 4-5 years... Japan has developed it's own breeds of pig and in general they have a tighter hair follicle pattern which makes for a tighter grain. I wish I could source that but that was what I discovered several years ago comparing different leather samples and talking to leather experts in trying to understand why it was Japanese Pig Skin that seemed to make the best tips.

With there being 100s of breeds world wide some breeds from other parts of the word may have the same characteristic or even better ones... I have no need or desire to check on that as all I care about is COR and Springrate vs Hardness in any material that goes on the end of a cue mainly the Original Mooris interest me the most.. I do with chemicals what mother nature did not do as far as modifying those aspects of traditional cow and buffalo to give those hides higher elasticity than they normally have from a tanner....

You swine, now pay attention: Here's a tough pig, and a soft pig...

The Zan is currently my 2nd favorite layered tip on the market.. The dye process and chemical process seem to make them a little more porous than many layered tips I have tested but they do test high in COR and hold up a little longer before they start to harden

Okay, Chris, what is your favourite layered tip on the market?

Currently my preference is the G2... They are a treated leather, have a nice elasticity to them and stay a soft or medium longer than most of the competition. They also seem to keep from glazing for longer periods...

Some layereds begin to change hardness fast enough that you can actually tell it in the space of a few hours... Others take days or weeks... The G2 when we tested it went over a month before it had changed more than a few points in hardness..

Be very careful tho on your source for them.. They are now known to be being counterfeited and while the last ones were easy to ID the new fakes will have the right color ink used for the glue text... Harder to fake will be the color and the patterning of the leather on the real McCoy....

Ignoring price, how's the COR and length of time before hardening as compared to the Zan? How 'bout initial hardness rankings?

The Zan is my 2nd choice because it also holds up longer than normal.. Initial Hardness wise the soft and medium G2 were harder but both had a similar Hardness/COR ratio. The G2 did have the better ratio but not by much.. The Zan did not burnish up as nicely and I could see the layers thru the chalk which always had me worried but for no reason as they never actually lifted...

I will say I tested the original Zan which may be different than the Zan premiere... This may be a name change only or a new improved version.. When I am back in test mode for the synthetics I am working on I will order some of the new premieres just to verify...

I had some help rearranging the work area and my help didn't realize how fragile the COR tester was and how precise it had to be to work... I have to build a new one from scratch as I don't think there is a single part of it that was not twisted or bent... Have a new idea in mind tho that should be useful for more than just COR... Looks like a Feb job tho =/

Very informative, Chris. I appreciate your taking the time... :D
