The performers are indeed athletes, they simply aren't "competing" for anything. And almost all of them for far less money than they deserve, given the punishment their bodies take over the years.
It's a silly men's soap opera, that's all. I like how another poster described it, ballet with more violence. Quite accurate.
I have been watch Wrestling since I was a small child in Florida, I remember Gorgeous George parading into the Ring and throwing his GOLD BOBBY Pins to the fans, the Great Freddie Blassey who was always the BAD Guy calling everyone a Penciled Neck GEEK!
In LA we had Pro Wrestling, and I remember Dick "WHOA NELLIE" Lane the Announcer who was always getting beat up by some wrestler for asking tough embarrassing questions.
Pro Wrestling is now big business thanks to the GENIUS of Vincent Kennedy McMahon, and the WWE, who have brought big name advertiser to support the WWE, like Auto Zone , etc., thanks to a the loyal Fan Base the WWE has.
Also the WWE does a lot of good, like entertaining our Armed Forces overseas, and making many "LAST WISHES" come true for kids with terminal illnesses through a partnership with the Make A Wish Foundation.
