Is it possible for eye-dominance to shift depending on head-position?

For example, can your dominant eye shift as you go from standing over a shot to being down on the shot?

Yes, your vision center can and must change with head position, tilt and turn. I’ve been saying this for years on these forums. There’s a simple test you can do to prove it.

I had never considered that to be possible... left eye dominant, I figured was “set in stone”.
 
I’m right eyed....I can’t read a book with my left eye.....
...but some days I’ve shot out of my left eye....and played well.
I don’t think your vision has to be consistent....I just see the best way I know how.
....and it varies.

There's bound to be others of us getting older, whose vision is still pretty good, except that it isn't; or it has anomalies.

The "dominant eye test" does not seem to work definitively for me, but then i do other things wrong, too. Could just be me. Nonetheless, "back when" eye surgeons got together and agreed that due to work& activities, repairing my left eye should be very short focus and my right eye left normal. Not only that, left eye has a wave in it due to retina repair (sees a wave in straight lines). With glasses both eyes are about 20/20, left is a smidge weaker. I'm still not sure left isn't sometimes dominant. Which is not ideal for pool, it's like trying to grab a fish in the water. The problem is not that you aren't fast enough, but that the fish (in this case pool ball) is not exactly where you see it.

If i play a few nights in a row, my system compensates. Once a week or less and it takes a while to re-adapt which is a complete confidence killer.

1) Visually align a cut shot in the pool stance. If you rotate your head, your eyes tend to swivel in your head to correct your sighting, but if you move your head laterally . . . your eyes/vision center must be consistent over the cue ball to sight well.

2) Three vision myths: 1) Pool is rifle shooting (rifles have blurry targets, crisp sights, but pool is opposite) 2) dominant eye over the cue or 3) chin over the cue work for few players, since most players have a vision center between one eye and their nose

No. Physically dominant eyes don't change. But there are other definitions of eye dominance that people have adopted.

Here's the definition of a physically dominant eye: An eye that transports the information to the brain faster than the recessive eye. The reason it transports the information faster is because of the number of and configuration of the nerves that connect the eyes to the brain.

Some people have slightly dominant eyes and others have severely dominant eyes depending on the nerve configurations.

So what effect does an eye have that grabs the information first? If it's severely dominant you will have a tough time trying to keep your cue under your recessive eye. It will always tend to drift towards the dominant eye. If you insist on fighting a severely dominant eye you will tire faster. So what if you see the line better with your recessive eye? Well, you'll either have to continue to fight against the eye or adapt to it and make adjustments. I made adjustments and my severely dominant eye doesn't affect me in a negative way at all.

Uh, yeah i agree. Your dominate eye is your dominant eye. How you approach a pool shot won't change that. Occular dominance CAN change with changes in what eye docs call "gaze angle". GA changes of around 15+deg. off center can induce momentary dominance change.

Thanks for the fish analogy...describes my macular degeneration in the left eye perfectly. I'm trying various head positions, closing that eye, etc. Getting the shots in the eyeball, spent $$$ on new glasses prescription...still, NOT happy.

Yeah..it's called AMD...age related macular degeneration. Groan...
