Thoughts on break shafts?

After 14yrs I'm thinking about getting an upgrade for my good ole faithful McDermott break cue. Butt itself is still OK, shaft has lots of dents and wear. Bit on the fence on buying a new shaft or whole new cue. Is it really worth buying a new cue if the butt is still OK? Not really sure ..

McDermott has some shafts designed for breaking like Sledgehammer and Stinger. OB has a few specific break shafts. Cuetec Cynergy would fit too, sure there are plenty of others.

Just wondering; does anyone have any experience in buying break shafts for "older" butts? For example, would it make sense to buy a REVO, OB or Cynergy shaft (if they sell the break version separately) for this "old" break cue?
 
people do it often with playing cues, i dont know about break shafts, might be tough to sell later since thats something i dont see much of
 
Opinions on "best" break shafts are just as subjective as with playing shafts.

Forget any advice on here and just use as many as you possibly can before buying. Hate to say it, but sometimes you just have to buy the one you decided on (through extensive research) and hope that it pans out. I've gone through several or more break shafts until I settled on my now-preferred shaft, which is the Pechauer Black Ice, which may or may not be one that you'd like.

Definitely nothing wrong with pairing a new break shaft to an older butt.

New shaft

Before you buy a new shaft, try a new tip. Have your local cue tip changer person install a new fancy (insert your favorite tip here) tip on then clean and remove the dents in your shaft. This might perk your break cue up a little and save you a bunch of money.

I really like going for a whole break cue rather than the shaft. I like the Mezz Kai. I don't know of many shafts being sold specifically for breaking except OB's.
 
What’s up Carom,
Just a hack, so grain of salt. How would a new shaft affect the balance of your cue? I would think a more forward balance is typical. Will a new shaft be lighter or heavier than the old? How will that affect balance and your approach?
