Thoughts on Wood Joint Collars

I have seen this on a couple cue makers cues, using exotic woods for joint caps like cocobolo and tulipwood for example. I recently had a local cue-smith replace the SS piloted joint on my Jacoby with a birdseye joint collar. The cue was heavy to begin with so that took a lot off plus it looks very good because the cue has a cocobolo forearm and butt with a birdseye handle with black phenolic rings at a,b,c and d, it looks really sharp. I played with it a little timid at first fearing that I would crack it but its been over a week now and I am starting to appreciate the feel of the joint now. It is becoming my regular playing cue now and I am loving it. I am going to get it refinished by Jacoby cuz it has some major dings in it and I want him to replace the buttcap with a birdseye cap also, should look pretty slick and not affect the play of it. I'll post pictures if anyone is interested.

They do look sharp, BJ. The most basic of Sneaky Pete's is somewhat the grandfather of this joint configuration. Just don't forget to seal the end grain as this is the main entrance and exit point of moisture. I'm glad that you're happy with the new config, Jacoby does do great work.

buddha.....i feel that when having that done the cuemaker or repair guy should have sleeved the maple over a piece of phenolic to give you the added strength that you lost when having the steel removed...and not much difference in the weight also......juston coleman

You are probably right Juston, I am sure that he had never done that kind of joint before. I will play with it as is for now, but if it cracks I will do the phenolic insert the next time.
