Threaded Joint Collars and Threaded Butt caps - better to use a fine pitch or coarse

Ever since receiving my new lathe which has a thread mill attachment, I've been live threading my Ferrules, joint collars, and butt caps. I'm on the fence about whether I like a coarse thread (10 tpi) or fine thread (18 tpi) for the joints and butt caps. Fine seems to be the right answer for ferrules on shafts but for the rest of them, I'm on the fence.

Which is better for this application? Coarse thread with less thread engagement and more wood left; or Finer thread with more surface area thread engagement but less wood engagement? I have noticed that the longitudinal glue relief needs to be larger on the finer threads to relieve the hydraulic pressure.

So, 10 tpi or 18 tpi for live threaded joints and caps?? I know there are more options than that but 10 and 18 are the gear sets I currently own.

That's why you make mock ups to figure things out. But for most of what you want to thread 10 TPI is really coarse and it's not gonna be a lot of threads on say a shaft collar or even a joint collar. I use mainly 18 TPI myself, but do give 12, 14 and 16 TPI a try too and see what you think works best.

I am doing the mock-ups but do find value in asking for what others have had success with. No sense re-inventing the wheel when best practices may already be known.

16 tpi so you don't need to watch the thread dial.
You can thank Coos Cues for that.
22 for short pieces ( 3/8 or under )

I ended up going with 18 on both ends, worked out great, but I must admit that custom threading is a bit of a PITA on my equipment.

Thanks Kim and Joey!
