One other mechanism I forgot to mention is shallow grooving of your pieces at several places along the inside of the tenon. They act as keyways for the glue to harden in and firm it up a little. The snug fitting piece over the tenon will hold for quite a long time.
Longevity of the cue becomes the issue. Most of the techniques that have been described will work well for a long time. No one way will satisfy everyone. Let's just build fine playing cues and agree to disagree on some issues. We should discuss them respectfully, and go on from there. We learn and "may" change our attitudes. In the end we all develop our "pet" ways of doing things.
