I HAVE been running my 3 phase lathe on a vfd. However, since I purchased the dowling(which is 5hp 5ph) machine and another lathe that were also 3 phase it seemed logical to research a rotary phase converter.
I came across a used Phase Perfect phase converter. I didn't know these existed until I saw one on Craigslist. Unlike RPC's that need to be oversized, the PPC will sustain up to the HP it is rated for.
I got a used 10 HP for 1250 and the rest of what I needed for a couple hundred more.
They are certainly not cheap, but I'm at what a new 20hp RPC would have cost and the thing weighs 115 lbs as opposed to 350, is considerably smaller, mounts on the wall, and provides perfectly clean 3 phase for CNC's.
I'll update this with pics once I get it mounted..
