I picked up my pill bottle yesterday and low and behold, The Pool Jeanie popped out of the bottle. He said he could grant me three wishes. There was a stipulation it had to involve pool shots I've missed in the past that, given a chance, I could relive them and I would make them this time.
I've had a few that have cost me some sleep so I thought long and hard to remember the most important ones.
The first that came to my mind was my match against Steve Mizerak. It was hill, hill and I was breaking. I made a ball and had a shot at the one-ball. I was shooting over a ball and meant to hit the cue-ball with follow. I stroked it several times and shot.
The problem was, I hit more of a center-ball hit. I made the one-ball but my cue-ball caromed of the six-ball and into the side pocket.
Steve got ball-in-hand and ran out the rack.
It was Halloween 1987. I got tricked. Steve got the treat.
Shot number two came against Mike Zuglan.
I was ahead in the match 8-4. I missed a fairly easy three nine combination to close out the set and win the tournament. Of course Mike feasted on my mistake. He made the nine that rack and proceeded to run out the rest of the set. I sat helplessly in my chair and watched it all.
The third shots just happened this past weekend. The jeanie says I can use shots in the same match if I need to.
I missed an eight-ball at 8-7 against Max Erbele my lead and a six-ball on the hill the next game.
I suddenly awake from my dream in very cold sweat. The truth is: "You can get these shots back after you pull the trigger.
I'm grateful for all the memories I have of playing the game of pool. Even though some still haunt my dreams.
What shots haunt your dreams?
