Tight 4.5 Inch Pockets Vs Loose 4.5 Inch Pockets

Tightening up pockets
You can get pool pockets down below 4 inches if you keep 'em shallow.
Tightening the pockets up by lengthening the subrails and cushion rubbers will automatically decrease the depth of the pocket shelf, so tables with pockets tightened up to 4” will always have very shallow pocket shelfs.

Let's use the Gold Crown as an example.

Is it possible for a Gold Crown IV with 4.5 inch pockets to play much tighter than a Gold Crown IV with 4.5 inch pockets?

And yes, you read that right.

GC4 didn’t come with 4.5” pockets. My GC4 was shimmed to 4.5” so I imagine that there’s inconsistency with Brunswick and the person who shimmed the pockets. The shimmed pockets also have the wrong pocket angles, also new cloth makes it play easier.

Yep. All GC's had 5" corners until the GC5 Tournament Edition. HOW a pocket is reduced has huge effect on how its plays.

You either play world-class level or you're full of shit. Based on what you said about cues and balance point effects i'm leaning towards the latter. Pool on pockets that tight is a joke. Its all just 'cinch' pool where cheating the pocket to play shape(a HUGE part of the game btw) is impossible. I play in a room with 10 GC4's that a former mgr. tightened 6 of them to about 4 1/8. Ridiculous. Even the good players hate them, avg. Joe's can't make a ball. Literally, cannot make a ball. "Loose sub 4"'rs" WTF. Yeah right.
Sometimes people just want to have a D*ck measuring contest, just ignore them. You are 100% right about pocket size.
People think their epeen grows if they say they have a 4" pockets triple shimmed, and then talk about the ball set they use, along with their chair and the 50 sticks they have.

Give em ball in hand after the break and you'll shoot again.

My Diamond at home 4 3/4" pockets. Diamond tables I play league at, 4 1/2" pockets. Neither tables are modified. My league tables with 4 1/2" pockets play noticeably easier than my home table, and both tables have same cloth.
There is more to it than pocket opening, sure it is easier to hit my 4 3/4" pockets, but the ball will drop easier on the 4 1/2" pockets. In my case it's that when you get a 4 3/4" pocket, what they don't tell you is the shelf ends up being deeper. Don't ever order a 4 3/4" pocket diamond table for home use. It's not a vast difference, but there is a difference.
As been said, all this talk about pocket size is meaningless unless you know the whole story.

Seriously? Played on both myself and would never say the 4.75 pockets were easier to make balls on. The tiny diff. in shelf depth doesn't over-ride the mouth size. League-cut Diamond's are like shooting balls into buckets.

Go back to school with your reading. Maybe Tom H could help you at that. Never stated the 4 3/4" were easier. just the opposite actually. And I, and our friends have actual experience with and regularly shoot on both. Go have a cup of coffee and chill out, it's not even noon yet.

I think that the original Brunswick GCI got it right - the game was 14.1 and you had to develop a stroke and actually learn how to play the game correctly to be successful . ESPN and 9 ball changed everything - just be able to count 1-9 and the game became easy - so now they had to fool with pocket openings.
You cannot run 16 balls on 5 inch pockets if you don’t understand 14.1 but you can run 1-9 all day long on that same table with just a bit of pool knowledge- THIS is the true difference in the game today - it is not the pockets - it’s the game being played.

Nobody's running out in rotation 9/10 Ball with just a little bit of knowledge no matter what size the pockets are.

I don't have a table I just miss tight pockets, they are about evolution of the craft. Not even gonna start on my dick. :p

You guys make me wish I got a classic GC with 5” instead of the 4.5” pro cut that came with the GCV TE. Anything less than pro cut 4.5” seems masochistic no matter the game.

The 4.5s helped tighten up my game, but sometimes it would be nice to just loosen up and runs some balls without my ass puckering up.

Not even for One Pocket. When its go time, its go time even in One Pocket. This 4'' thing needs to stop.
Tell Matchroom to stop with 4" pockets. Even Diamond now has a factory option for 4" pockets. We're about to start construction on our new house. I'm going back and forth about pocket size, 4 1/8 or 4 1/4. It will be my practice table so leaning towards 4 1/8 unless I find a used table that's 4 1/4. I also hate ball return tables, even if I'm practicing rotation but especially for 1P.

You can get pool pockets down below 4 inches if you keep 'em shallow. Snooker wonder tits ruin the pool for me, I think even Heyball would benefit from flat facings.
You raise a great point. The shelf depth is what I don’t like, even deep shelf’s on much bigger pockets pisses me off, even watching balls hang when I’m not playing isn’t cool. That’s personal preference of course. I just don’t like balls hanging up deep.

Take care
Fatboy 😃😃👍

Maybe I should post a pic of my corner pockets?

After the tornado that went past my place early this morning and the ensuing damage - siding, gutters, limbs, mailbox post snapped in half - I am just glad to be able to get down to my table.

A little bit of knowledge compared to what you need to know to have decent runs in14.1 for damn sure.

Nope, Not at all..., theres no little bit of knowledge getting you all the way out in rotation. Maybe I should ask what you consider a decent run in 14.1 compared to a decent run in 9Ball or 10Ball?

I just cannot continue a discussion with someone who wants to compare the amount of knowledge required in 14.1 to the pool knowledge required for 9 ball.

WTF???? Go re-read your own shit pal. You said 4.5's at league played easier than your 4.75 at home, correct?? I play on them both too a-hole and the 4.75 league cuts are waaaaaay easier to play on. To hang a ball on a 4.75 Diamond you have to hit it like pure shit.
