A VERY good player recently told me that you practice your technique on tight pocket tables. Of course cheating the pocket is something you can't practice on super tight pockets.
Most of us hit the object balls with far too much speed and a tight pocket will force you to slow down your speed. Not only that, but you will begin to refine your alignment and increase your focus if you are able to pocket balls on the tight table.
I think practicing rhythm on more generous pockets makes sense too.
You can practice and improve different aspects of your game on tight pockets and on loose pockets, just different things.
