Tim Scruggs 1980's

Still nearly mint from the mid 80's is a Scruggs that I enjoy playing with a lot. 36 ivory inlays, 4 point cocobolo and tiger maple, Ivory butt, 5/16x14 fully jointed s.s. with 2 original shafts, 1-12.0mm and 1-12.75mm ivory ferrules. What the pictures didn't pick up are the 12 mother of pearl inlays between the ivory daggers in the butt sleeve and 4 faint blood veins in the ivory butt plate. Note the long Ivory daggers in the forearm which you don't see Tim do many of today. It's the best playing cue I've ever had the pleasure of owning.

Recently I bought a whole crocodile hide and am planning to have Tim use it to replace the wrap which you can see is a bit soiled but still in good shape.

My delima is, replace the wrap with the croc or have the original linen cleaned and re-pressed. Your comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If this is my cue, I would have the cuemaker/wrapper dye the crocodile hide to match the color of the cocobolo. I think plain croc hide's colors don't really go too well with cocobolo. Adding some redish tint to the croc hide would make the colors go together nicely. Otherwise, I would have it rewrapped in white with brown spec linen.

I think a varied tone brown lizard (ala Mottey) would look awesome.

Brown Boar/pigskin leather would look great too.

I've never seen a croc/gator wrap that I liked, it's just too much for a cue...just mo!

Thanks for the input. I was just on Mottey's web site and love the reddish brown lizard he uses. I hear his exotic wraps are nearly seamless too. He's one of the best. If I use the croc, it would definately be dyed that color.

The white/brown spec linen is a really nice contrast. Thats what it originally was and still is, hard to tell cause it's dirty. I recently saw a Mike Seigal with that color linen combo was a knockout. The crocodile would definately go brown with a redish tint (cognac) . The vote is still out!

Mottey really knows how to color coordinate. A piece of brown lizard is, in my opinion, the best bet. If you can get a piece to match the color of the cocobolo, it'll look great and compliment the lighter maple color.

Croc/Gator is a bit much. It just looks a little weird. Not my taste. Paul Fanelli posts on this site and his lizard/leather wrap is excellent. I've got two wraps of his on my cues that I'm very happy with.

The perfect choice! Tim does lizard wraps, so I would have him put it on the cue and refinish. Maybe you could trade him some croc skin for the lizard wrap. Just a thought...

Very nice cue, but i would reccomend whatever you do concerning the wrap let tim do it, he made the cue he knows it best, and i m sure he ll make you happy.
