Time for new eyeglasses, thoughts?

OK, I'm 60 y/o, have worn glasses for years, contacts and lasik is not an option. I do OK with glasses but don't like them. I'm thinking of getting a pair with larger lenses, especially in height, and get them positioned a bit taller on my face. I like to get down over the cue as far as possible, not quite to where my chin is touching my cue though. Getting down this far does require the glasses sit up pretty high on your face.

All you other guys with glasses, do you find a larger lens allows you to get down on the cue better? Any other thoughts before I start this process would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Shooter, take a look on google for billiard glasses, you will find a few options. I recently purchased a pair from Bill Curran, he's a member here.

All I can say is go for it! makes a huge difference.

Good luck.

I looked at those billiard glasses. I'm sure they would work out just fine and I'm sure they're a fine product,
and they always get good reviews by most AZ'ers, but to be honest I thought they were butt-ugly and a little
on the expensive side. I purchased from an on-line optical sales a pair of large nerdy round lens glasses
(no frame) and they seem to work just fine. They were very price effective too.

It depends on what type of correction you have - single vision or bi / tri focals; and the area each corrected section takes up. These areas can be adjusted, but a separate pair for just pool does make sense as you need short distance correction from about 1 foot to 15 feet. I'm in my late 60's and just wear my normal bi-focals and move my head a little to bring things in focus.

Another thing to consider is if you will be a candidate for cataract surgery in the near future. If so, you can expect a big change in your vision and anything you do now as far as vision correction will probably not work after cataract surgery. I had cataract surgery (both eyes) about 5 years ago and my vision is better but I still wear glasses with a whole new perscription.

Glasses

You can google snooker glasses, England and I think its Glasses 4 Less. Not too expensive and they work great.

When you have glasses fitted, have them put the optical center up a tiny bit past where they are normally.
Works well, didn't cost any extra, and the bit of "up from centered-ness" hasn't been any issue for daily use....
Your mileage may vary, but it was a great compromise from standard glasses to big ugly specialized ones.
Hope this helps

Personally, I would try to deal with your local optician first. Explain to them what you're trying to do. Perhaps show them a photograph of the billiard glasses found in your Google search. If they do not turn out as you wished, you have someone to help you locally. I've been the other route. Not happy.

The larger lenses have helped me. I didn't get the "pool glasses" ... just a regular pair of bi-focals; but, with larger lenses.

This is what I did as well. Very effective for no extra cost.

glasses

Thanks for the replies gents. I have a pair of billiard glasses I bought many years ago from Lunetterie St-Lambert Opticians in Canada. They are identical to the rimless snooker glasses, (large tall lenses), but mine have a rim on the under side. The script is way out of date but I could use these frames. My regular glasses are progressive lenses. I looked at the Spex4less and Snookerspex sites and it appears they offer the lens in a single vision only. I sent them a-mails to confirm this. I think I'd like to have my progressive prescription on my pool glasses. How important do you guys think it is to have the progressive lens on the pool glasses?

When I had my eyes checked a week ago, I told the doc I was a pool player and needed to be able to get down over the cue and see thru the top of my glasses. he just said he could adjust them so they sit higher on my nose and didn't seem to care much past that.

Guess I'm still in the research stage.

Thanks.

I'll have to say that I was hesitant to spend the money on these glasses. They are not inexpensive.

Having played with them for a few weeks I can say:

Bill Curran's glasses are very high quality. His adjustments to my prescription were perfect.

The turn around on my order was very quick.

He was very responsive to my queries, and in fact I hemmed and hawed with him for over a year before I finally bought a pair.

If you love the game, definitely get a pair of glasses designed for the game, from Bill or someone else. What a difference it makes.

Before I knew of Bill Curran, I ordered glasses from a Canadian optician. To answer your question, yes the larger lenses help...a LOT!

I like the post mentioning that Bill can shift the focus distance. I prefer playing on 9' tables, making that aspect even more important, I would think.

My Experience...

... with custom billiard glasses has worked out well - I've had them less than 6 months. They allow for a greater visual focus without putting a "crick" in my neck! I wear progressive lenses, and the optician (a skilled player, BTW) gauged my lens at my "middle-distance" - or the focal point that I use for computer work (not close-up and not distance); this put sharper vision between 30" and 8-feet. For Seattle-area, see Expressions in Eyewear in Woodinville. He custom-shaped the lenses in plastic while I waited a few minutes, approved the shape & fit - with a few minor adjustments, then ordered the glasses with non-glare lens. I picked some upgraded frames that will last forever and can twist & bend. I had them within 10 days...
