Tip and Ferrule Type

From what I have read, the Pros use all sorts of different tips, shaft sizes, and cue weights. I've read that some compress their tips for 24 hours in a vise after soaking. Solutions to soak the tips in can be all sorts of stuff including half and half milk! The problem with doing this is that it may not be very consistent and you may get different tips. I would think you should test each tip for hardness with a type "D" durometer ($400.00) first. (Tips out of the box will vary in hardness.) Then compress each tip with a guage which measures how much pressure is being applied. Then test each tip after compression. This equipment is too expensive for me!

I think the best thing to do is experiment with different "off the shelf" tips. Soft, medium, hard. Then different brands/types. Leather, layered, pig skin, phenolic, plastic, rubber, etc. Also different tip shapes. Quarter, nickel, dime. Best lesson about tips you will ever get!

I use a Moori III (Q) dime shape on my playing cue (shaft should be
12.5 mm or less for dime shape), a Tiger break/jump quarter shape on my
break stick, and a Bunjee jump dime shape tip on my jump stick.

I like Everest tip and Ivor-X ferrule. Nickel shape, not too thick.
For a pressed non-layered tip, I don't know how a bluish top old Triangle can be beat.

Yeah, I know.....it's the one combo I feel the best with....I've tried em all (or at least most)

Ferrules tried:
Ivorine
ABS
Buckhorn
Plastic
Aegis II
Ivory

Tips Tried:
Elk master
Triangle
Le Pro
Moori (S, M, Q) Haven't tried the newest incarnation yet
Instroke
Sniper (and most of the other Tiger tips)
Tad
Porper Lam a tip
Talisman (and most of there products)

I've tried them in just about every combination known to man...I got lucky to work at Best Billiards and had 2 cuemakers that liked me (one being Kerry Zeiler) that would put me together just about any combination I could come up with....

I like Ivor-x with the moori med.
Yep, the blue topped triangles are hard to beat, i had a guy that said no triangle is better than LePro lol, roflmmfao... i can't stand a damn LePro lol...
Yes joey, i looked again at my triangles, they were all blue except for around 3 or 4 browns in the bottom 25. I had it backwards :P .
I've been using the browns to see just how much pressure it would take to "bust" one in a vise... i must be weak, or the browns must be super strong, cause i can't get them to bust, as punishment to the brown, i drilled a hole in it... That'll teach 'em...

Thanks,

Jon

Kinda sad actually when a maker of a great product fixes what wasn't broke.
Triangle was a favorite among pros for a long time.

I use Ivor-X with a Moori medium.

So which one were you at Best? Del? Shawn(Sean)? Just curious.

Maybe they couldn't find good quality leather for 1 piece tips so they use what they can.

To my knowledge, no "single layer" tip is one single layer. It is ground up, and glued and pressed back together. The different hardness(es) comes from the different glues/resins. And the coarse ground leather is better IMO, than the finer (Lepro for instance.)

My name is Dan, I managed Best Billiards after Kevin left.

As far as Triangles go, the Book according to Hoyle (or in this case, Kerry Zeiler) according to the manufacturer, the color of the tip comes from how long or short the amount of time spent in it's chemical cure....those that have lots of chemical left in them remain bluish, those that don't, are brown.

Kerry would search for hours through boxes of triangles, picking the blue ones out, and then would send the rest back to the manufacturer.
