If you get your hands on a Muller Sporting Goods catalogue (order one free on their website) they have a nice rating system for tip hardness.

My friend Don Wallace, a good cuemaker in Arlington, TX, can give you the hardness of your Pool Cue Tip & provide you with another Tip, that is the same hardness or at the very least very, very, very close.

Don has a special machine tester for leather hardness.
