Tip help please

I bought the Rage heavy hitter Jump/break cue. It breaks good but the tip doesn’t hold chalk very well. I think it came with a Bakelite tip. Using How chalk. I put a white diamond on a basically house cue. I really liked the way it broke until on a miscue it popped off, haven’t found it yet. Also don’t remember how well it held chalk. Thinking about putting on a hard leather tip. Would I loose a little on the break but help me on masse and jump shots?

Synthetic tips do serve their purpose but chalking is definitely an issue. Some people don't care if those tips chalk well or not, but I prefer chalk on the tip, so I put a file or heavy sandpaper to it until it gets rough and some fibers come up. If there are fibers that come up, regardless of the material, it will hold chalk.

Tip Piks also work.

On really hard tips I really like something like the kamui gator grip. I've said this a lot, but it's the best thing I've found for roughing up break tips, from phenolic to white diamond style material to bakelite they do a wonderful job.

Sandpaper does work really well. For OP's benefit, it's kind of like twisting in a small spot and moving around. You don't really want to turn the shaft into the paper, but turn the paper on the tip if that makes sense. You're wanting to make the whole tip top a matte finish, not grind it away.
