Tip controversy erupted when snooker player Jimmy White of the UK was found to be using a non-leather-tipped cue stick in his match against Hung Ming Chu. Tournament director Deno Andrews announced, “Jimmy White was caught using a phenalic tip, which is prohibited on the IPT. Last night at the players’ meeting it was stated you are disqualified from the entire tournament if caught using the tip; however, his flight was late, he was traveling, and could not make the players meeting, so without him knowing, we decided instead to have him forfeit that match zero-eight and allow him to continue playing.”

The IPT rules on the tip are very clear. Must be leather.
Not hard to tell either. Just tap on a phenolic tip with a car key or something metal and listen to the "click." You can hear the different sound when you break also. That may be how it was found.
At that level ignorance of the rules and equipment is certainly not an excuse.

Ignorance of the rules is no excuse for this player.
Not being at the player's meeting is not an excuse for the IPT not having the guts to penalize like they said they would.
Travel problems is not an excuse for not making the player's meeting. Other players plan for potential flight delays and come in 2 days early.
In fact, not being at the player's meeting is suppose to be fofeiture of the tournament. So much for that rule.

Jimmy is used to very strict rules on the snooker tour so there should be
no excuses.
