Was watching the video of Kamui clear tip instalation and I saw that the guy is puting a layer of sandpaper between ferrule and kiridashi knife.
What is the purpose of that sandpaper?
Video starts at 3 minutes 54 sec.
.

Thank you

The sandpaper leaves a rough/larger layer so you can final trim later. I found this method very difficult. One layer of painters tape works better.

What I like to do is use a utility knife and with the shaft pointing down and tip on the table i like to rough trim the extra tip till i get it semi round. Then I finish up with the Kiridashi knife.

What I've found is if you keep the knife flat on the shaft there really isn't much concern of kicking or scratching the shaft.

These knives are pretty cheap. I bought a decent one for about $20 on amazon. They can be sharpened too. I wouldn't going too nuts making this razor sharp. You're just cutting leather.

that is to prevent the knife from damaging the ferrule as you trim it....remember to put the grit side against the knife blade. Any kind of thin but strong paper will work.

The grit isn't touching the shaft. It's only the paper backing.
You can do the same thing with just a piece of paper.
It's just a precaution

Here's a Dr. Dave & Bob Jewitt instructional video:

I like the idea of using a kiridashi knife instead of a utility knife.
