Ok is it all preference for final tip height? Just finished putting black tip on Predator 314 shaft and did dime shape tgat just took off the top layer so full length and looks weird.
Do most people cut off 1/4-1/2 length of leather then shape for better looks?

Looks???????

It's how it plays that matters...to me, anyway.

The funkier my cue looks the more my opponent might be distracted.

I make them 1/2 the diameter of the shaft/ferrule.
That's actually a good idea. If I used a tan tip probably wouldn't look as high on wood shaft but Black tip stands out and looks tall. On my Jacoby CF shaft you don't notice cause the shafts black

It all depends on the type of tip and the diameter of the shaft. A Kamui Clear on a Z3 shaft need a lot more trimming than say a Tiger Sniper on a 13mm shaft. When you have done enough tips you just instinctively know what's right. Some customers have very specific requests, if so I follow those, as long as they make sense.

Yep makes sense. I ended up trimming 1/4 down and put dime radius on it with 11.9mm shaft. Looks good now

The best tip shape is a part of ellipse form, starting more flat at center and increase radius on the edge, more you go on the cue ball edge more you need radius increased.

Hmmmmm. Every $400-600 shaft I bought always had that same profile I have with sharp edge. I don't think I've seen with my own eyes what you are talking about but if you have pics of top level guys with edges filed down I will surely change.

If you think you are right, go with it and make miscue :)
I wasn't arguing just saying I've played with that shape for 24 years and havnt miscues. I was just saying is that your take or do you know of many top players that after they dime shape go back and sand the edges for that angle? Just a question that's all

Top player don't play with sharp edge like you show, you can't put maximum english securely with that shape, the draw that i showed is just an exemple we can modulate our form like we want, but the edge need to be more rounded. Do how you think.

Well shit all these years I've been shaping them wrong so I'm going to round those off tomorrow and try it out. Tha ks for the tip and never thought about it that way

An exemple, it's a tip of top snooker player and pool players play with more english than snooker players, when you go at maximum english the contact need to be on a round part of tip not a sharp edge.

I have a lathe and i use metal file for shaping and i finish with sand paper for a proper grip, i find metal file more accurate for shaping but others methods are good too. Some use cutter blade on lathe but I prefer radius cutter attachment and metal file for shaping.

Do you fill down from tip to butt or use the sandpaper file to go up and away from you?

You can buy a pin for your joint and use a drill to turn your shaft, when I use a paper sand file I fill up from butt to tip center.
