ok, now these are real rookie questions, but how does one go about shaping the tip when they have a new one installed? i have a Cube but it doesnt seem to get the job done adequately.

and what exactly does Burnishing mean?

When a tip is replaced by a quality repair person, it should be shaped and burnished as part of the job. If I sent a cue back to a customer without doing those things, I would expect that customer to refuse to pay me until the job was completed.

Burnishing is simply "polishing" the edge of the tip. I use a bit of saliva and a small piece of undyed leather. I spin the shaft in a lathe until it gets warm. The same result can be done by hand. it just takes longer and takes more effort.

I've heard it can really screw up a layered tip, though.
Don't know if it's true, just heard of de-lam. problems.

Yes, and No...
The Porper Burnisher is conical. Therefore it does OK at the very end of the tip, but unless your tip is slightly tapered, all that will get burnished is the very end.
Don't use it on a layered tip 'cuz it will likely twist off a layer or two or three.

How does the Porper Burnisher work? Does it do a decent job? Thanks.
