Tips for buying and transporting a pool table.

I think I found a good deal on a gold crown II. It looks to be in great shape and is some older families home table.

I just have a few questions because I’m pretty green when it come to working on pool tables. Although I am pretty handy, and I’m a carpenter by trade.

Can/how would I transport it with my pickup truck?
Or should I use a work van?
Do I need to make a rack for the slates?
Is there anything I need to keep in mind when I take it apart?
How should I store it until my room is ready?
Is this something I should be able to figure out on the fly in a strangers home? Lol

Thanks in advance guys

PS I did secure some help equally as green as I am lol

I'd go with the work van. No need to make a rack, you can stack the slates on one another just make sure all there are no staples in the underside of the slate backers otherwise you''ll scratch the slate. Depending on the size of your van, you may need to disassemble the frame. What Gold Crown is it? The service manuals are floating around on here which will give you an idea on disassembly.

I think it’s a GC1 after looking at some examples online. I just added pictures to my post. I want to get the rails redone to play tighter while i finish my other projects around the house. I just need to find a mechanic..,

Is there anything special I need to do considering it’s brunstone? I’m not sure I’ll get it yet. I’m going to look it over real good Sunday. It’s not a done deal. I’m kinda skeptical of swayback and whatnot considering it’s sandstone.

Wow,
That's a great find.
Really good condition as well.
Don't let the fact that it's Brunstone put you off.
Just wondering how much are they asking.:)
1500 if the slates in good condition and the rails aren’t dead. I’ve been looking for awhile now.

I seen that 1 that you restored, and I have to say it’s probably the best looking pool table I’ve seen! Great work buddy

At $1500 you really can't go wrong.
Good luck
Maybe add some more pic's when you view the table.
I've just realised that it's a drop pocket. Cool.
Cheers

I paid $450 to have my table disassembled, transported 45 miles, and reassembled. I was money well spent. I hate to pay someone for something I can do myself but the convenience, knowing it was done right the first time instead of learning, etc. was well worth it. If you are looking for a project, have at it. If you are looking for a pool table, I think you will find the money for a pool table mover well spent.

Beautiful table. If that were near me, I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat! It looks to be in pristine shape. I hope everything works out for you and you have many years of enjoyment with this table. :)

Definitely look for the manuals with the search on here. If it's acting up, search on google with azbilliards added to the keywords.

thanks bro I wanted to go yesterday but I can’t get help until Sunday. I found a manual on here last night, and I’ve been scouring the forums for information.

Anyone know a ballpark of how much itll cost to send the rails off to get extensions and new mordern cushions put on? From the pictures it looks like 5” pockets. I want it to play tight. Maybe 4 3/8” corners and 4 7/8” sides.

Send them to JZMechanic. just guessing on price $1500-2000

It’s definitely a I. How do you know its got Brustone? I’ve got a Gold Crown I with slate so not all I’s came with Brustone.

For the rail work, you are looking at around $1,500. Where are you located?

if you are interested in going all the way with a full blown resto, you can probably learn from the mistakes I made along with way in restoring mine…lol. It’s a long read but you might find it helpful.

I don’t know for sure, but with it being a 1, and it appears all original, more than likely it’s brunstone right? I mean it would be awesome if it was slate...

I couldn’t get too much info on it because it’s this elderly dudes daughter that posted it, and she was having to call him for each question I had.

As far as restoration, i wasn’t concerned with appearance when I was looking for a table. I just want a gold crown that plays great. It’s just a plus that it’s in good shape. So after I get it, I’ll find a reputable mechanic to modernize the rails, while I finish my room, and then hire someone to come and set it up when I’m ready.

I’m in Charlotte NC, and if anyone can suggest top tier rail work I can ship to, and a mechanic in my area it would be much appreciated. Thanks rexus

When you go get it, the Brustone is easy to spot. It’s a reddish brown where slate will be gray. If it is Brustone, take extra care when transporting it as it is VERY brittle and is prone to cracking during transport. Avoid bumps and potholes. How far from you is the table?

An hour and a half away. That’s really my only concern atm... transporting the brunstone if that’s what it is. Is there anything special I need to do to protect it in transit?

I’m glad I’ve been doing my homework, because I read last night about the slate being pinned. Lol I know for a fact I would’ve just tried to lift it straight up without diligence haha

Also, I’m kind of leaning towards using my pick up, because my work van has shelves with only a 2’6” “isle” in the middle. What do you think?

I would think about putting a good packing blanket on the bed floor and one between each slate and tie them down enough to keep them from bouncing and moving around. I would also make sure to sweep out the bed well .
