I know this has been talked about before, but here it goes. Everyone has an opinion about what kind of tips to use. When I was a kid I always liked the soft tip due to being able to spin and draw the cue ball. I've been playing with the Japanese layered tips for 10 + years. I have friends playing with hard tips and I play with a medium black kamui. On other treads I've seen some good players talk about playing with soft tips. I'm not running out and getting what the pros play with, but what do they play with? The harder the tip is, the harder it is to control slow shots without adjustments and practice. With the better technology in layered tips, does this mean the softer tips are more durable (mushrooming) than the old soft tips (elk master). I've been thinking about trying a soft black kamui, but at $45 a pop, I don't want to piss off the money to find out I don't like it. I realize you have to shoot with it to know for sure but some input would be appreciated. Pros and cons of soft to hard. What are the benefits?

I'm not looking for someone to tell me what tip to play with. Just want to educate myself better before I decide. I think I'm pretty clear on most of the differences, but why hard, medium or soft. What do you gain and or lose from tip to tip?

softer tips have a better feel and spin. Sometimes they make it difficult to move the cue ball around the table, or "punch" the cue ball, since they absorb some of the impact. Hard tips have less feel but possibly more consistency and you can move the cue ball around easier. Layered tips have more consistency, tip to tip, and they keep their shape better and last longer. Some allow easier pinching of the cue ball. non layered tips I believe have a better feel/ control. You can move the cue ball precisely a foot or two one way or the other. I have not tried kamui blacks, but didn't like the regular ones. They run a notch harder than what they say. Try a black soft, which would actually be a medium tip. My friend who plays good just tried one and didn't care for it. My preference is for a talisman medium ($10 installed) for a layered, and a triangle or pressed elk master for regular tips. Since they cost a dollar these are what I use. I would never pay $40 for a tip. There are no rules exactly. This is my experience/ opinion. I believe I know what I'm talking about anyways. lol
