I am reading a book called "Titanic Thompson Stroke of Genius", one of the greatest gamblers (hustlers) of all time. Anyone know any stories about him?

It is an awesome read so far!

How are ya Sizl? Did you read about Titanic being the first person to hit a golf ball a mile yet? I'm sure it's in there though I haven't read it yet. Titanic Thompson bets a guy he can hit a golf ball 400 yards. He makes the bet, freezes the money and tells the guy he has to practice for a while and would get back to him ASAP. The guy holding the money didn't set a time limit and it was suppose to be in September when they made the bet. Titanic waits till it's mid January, takes the guy to a frozen lake and hits the ball. The ball slides for over a mile.

There was an old country Dr. in a little town that would gamble. Lived there his whole life outside of town, well coming into town there was a big old tree on a curve in the road that everybody knew about. Titanic makes an appointment with the Dr. but shows up late explaining that coming into town his car was too close to the edge of the road and he almost hit the tree so he had to pull over and compose himself. The Dr. replies, that can't be, the tree you're talking about is on the other side of the road. Well after arguing back and forth and Titanic telling him he almost got killed running into it and the Dr. stating he's lived there his whole life and knows where it's at they make a huge bet and go out there and sure enough the tree is on the other side of the road.

Titanic had a crew dig it up and move it to the other side!!!!!

Believe it...........or not!

The first time I heard that story was about 40 years ago. Jake

How are ya Jake? Yea, I'm 55 and this was suppose to have happened in the 1930-40s. I heard it in the early 70s. Luck,,$Bill.

P.S. There is an old book by Tom Fox called Minnesota Fats Tells All, The Bank Shot and other great robberies. Fatty relates a few Titanic Thompson stories in it. We all know Fatty's true speed but some of the stories in it are great. As I said I haven't read the latest book but I have read one in the past called The Unsinkable Titanic Thompson. I think you can get it for 7-8 bucks. Run a Google search on him. It's interesting.

Yes, it is in the book. He bets him he can hit it 500 yards. He bets another guy he can throw a peanut over a building (that was filled with bb's). I am only in the fourth chapter and he is getting WISER with age, I can only imagine what other scams he has in store.

I know 500yds is the distance stated in the older book and as you say, in this one too. But I was told this story by Utley J. Pucket who knew TT in the early 70s and U.J. told me it was 400yds. I don't know obviously but to say 500yds would tell me that it had to be a trap. 400yds would seem to be at the very edge of believability yet still draw bets....$Bill
