To pad or not to pad.........................?

On ivory ferrule shafts is a pad under a tip(solid, non-layered) recommended? I've seen/used with and without. Just curious as to what most makers/repair guys do. Thanx
 
Good advice, although, it really depends on the particular player type of game. I don't use it on my shafts but do it for 90% of players.

You ever notice leather tips mushrooming? I imagine some lateral force could be applied to the ferrule as the tip expands that way. A pad ensures this can't happen. This has always been my reasoning for them. I reserve the right to be wrong.

You are absolutely right. I have seen many thin walled soft plastic ferrules crack the same amount of the mushroom on the tip.
 
My understanding is either pad it or cap the ferrule. I think the pad takes away from the hit but I have had several that have cracked. Usually weather related and usually winter. Not exactly cheap when you keep replacing them and seems to be right around the time when the tip breaks in and the cue is hitting lights out.

Just noticed that one of my shafts with an ivory ferrule (no pad) has developed 2 small cracks. A miscue from trying to stretch too far. Hopefully the local guy has some IV and can replace with the same. I really like the hit so much more than anything that I have ever played with.
