To refinish or not to refinish...that is the question!

Will queue for cues
Silver Member
Well, I'm going to have to sell some more cues and perhaps need to put them on the dreaded eBay. My question to you guys is should I look into getting some finish work done on the cues before I sell? Do you think a refinish, or partial refinish can return more money than it costs to have done?

The main issues that I have are that all four of the shaft rings on the ER pair have popped the finish, there appears to be a finish scratch on one of the ER diamonds (hopefully not cracked ivory), there is a finish chip on the ER butt cap, there are some finish scrapes on the Gilbert butt sleeve and a couple of finish dings in the fore of the Gilbert. I've added some pictures of everything but the shafts as that's something you can only feel. Any help or guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for any and all assistance you can give.

Well from what I think, Having it refinished is a touchy area. It all depends on who done the repair or refinish. If you have it refinished by your "local cue repair guy" it may not hold resale value. It would be best to return it to the original maker for a refinish. Either that or someone equally prestegious. If you have an unknown do it, it will hurt the value I would say. Orginal maker is best, but it may take a long time to get that done. But if you can wait, I would say go for it as it will bring back the value to your cue. Of course you have to offset the cost of the refinish which may be over 100$+ So is the payoff worth the cost?

Also the cracked diamond should be repaired again by the original maker, especially if it is ivory. (unless its overseas which may be stopped at customs) I would think a damaged inlay would really hurt the value.
