Someone yesterday started a Thread looking for a 3 x 5 Soft Case. I have owned both, and for the life of me see no reason to put a Cue of VALUE in a Soft Case when a Hard Case like a Porper, Whitten, Talisman offers so much more protection. To the Proponents of Soft Cases, educate me as to why you like Soft better than Hard.

I know most Soft Cases weight less, but Hard Cases for the Most Part offer so much more protection.

I just feel uncomfortable pulling my cheap piece of crap cues out of a case that cost more than my cues....just a personal hangup, I suppose...

I use a softcase. They're a lot lighter, plus they don't look as conspicuous.

I would never go back to using a soft case. My cues are just to important to me to put them in something that doesn't protect them as much as possible.

Porper makes one of the best soft cases out there. It is a 4 X 8. It will hold two more butts between the sleeves making it in reality a 6 X 8. For a cuemaker like myself that carries two to play with and three for sale and a little extra room for repairs that might be picked up, it is hard to beat. Believe it or not the lining in some of the hard cases actually scrathes the finish on the butt of the cues. This is especially true if the cue fits tightly into the cylinder.

Just to play devils advocate, I live in a very humid area and cases like Justis style and hard box cases don't seem to protect the cue hardly at all. I prefer a soft case with a zipper that will seal the cue up and protect it on a humid night. In fact I could run to the car in a rain storm with my case and have many times, I would not be doing that with a Justis style case. As far as hard cases go though, I think the inexpensive vinyl porper may provide the most protection of all. What do you expect to happen to your cue when it's in the case? I have never had a car drive over mine, the most that may happen is it will fall over and a nicely made soft case provides fine protection. I also want to just be able to throw my case under the table and play, I don't want to be baby sitting my case while I am trying to play, I have better things to do. Some of those cases are thief magnets as well. You not only lose your favorite cue but an expensive case. 99% of what is going to hurt you cue is going to be environmental, Most protection is not going to be based on whether the case is hard or soft but how it seals up. Just a few points.

Soft cases ...

I was the one that started that thread ...

Here are some of my reasons:

1) Ever lugged 'hard' suitcases around as opposed to 'softer' ones?
Which do you like to handle?

2) Softer, not as fancy, cases are better for hustling and making
your opponent underestimate you.

3) They are lighter, and easier to handle. Ever lug a loaded 4 x 8 Porper
hard case around Vegas like I have. I had to go buy a car seatbelt pad
to help ease up on my poor shoulder.

4) Softer cases just seem warmer. Kind of like having a woman that
is soft with you, as opposed to having one that is cold with you.

5) Some of those 'leather' cases, the leather is so stiff, and getting
into the pockets is a hassle, and some are heavy and bulky.

6) Kind of like leather seats in a car, they look nice, but they are
cold in winter, and hot in summer, while good looking cloth
seats are just kind of the same all the time. Plus, if the right
choice is made, they as just as durable.

That's basically my reasons, besides I always take my cues inside,
never leave them in the car in the cold or heat. I don't mistreat
any of my equipment.

to be honest, I never really thought of my soft case as a way of protecting my stick...more of a convenient bag. I just put my case in my car, drive to the poolhall, carry it in, and take out my stick. My stick only spends time in the case when it's sitting at home or when I'm walking around the poolhall with it on my shoulder. So personally, I have no use for a hard case...to me they're just heavier and bulkier.

Scott,
Did you really just compare your cue case to a woman???? If so, this thread is going to deteriorate quickly (ie. How is a cue case different than a woman??). Let me start:

You don't have to give a cue case half of your income when you get rid of it.

But you lose half the income you put into it...lol.

A related question to all this concerns storage. When I'm away from home weekdays my cues are stored in my case at my condo, no rack to put them in, no pool table to lay them on.
Does a hard case provide any better protection from warpage as opposed to a flexible soft case? I'm not suggesting it does or doesn't, just asking.

not only that ...

But, I had Sara (a favorite cue of mine for 19 years), longer than any
of my 3 ex-wives, and she was still making me money instead of taking it away......lol

Can't say I particularly like one over the other. Depends on circumstances. What exactly are we protecting our cues from? I don't anticipate having mine run over by a car - or even putting them in a position where that could be a remote possibility. I have both hard cases (Justis / Whitten / George / Centennial) and the soft case (AVP Leather) that I am using now. The only reason I am using a soft case now is because it is the only case in which my cue fits - major circumstance there.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Also I bet Sara doesn't mind if you spend all night at the strip club. And probably doesn't object if you try to bring home one of the dancers.

A soft case is fine for the cue I have now.I'm not to worried about protection, more interested in transport. With a more expensive cue I'd probably get a hard case but NEVER would I get a damn case that cost as much or more than my cue (that's just plain nuts imo).I always thought the old box cases looked classy!

See, the trick here is you just have to buy more expensive cues to justify a more expensive case!

i get the feeling you should post this again, and ask for replys only from the ones that are trying to protect a $1000+ cue.

My answer would still be the same. I have opened box cases and found cues covered with mildew. I see wet wraps all the time here when it is humid due to the case. It is not how hard the case is but how it is constructed and seals up. Some of the most high end cases with their loose fitting tops held in place with snaps don't in reality protect the cue from the most common danger, humidity. I have no problem running through a rain storm to my car with my soft vinyl case with my $1000. + cue in it. There are a lot of cases that look nice but give a false impression of protection I would never do that with..
