Jimmy M. said:Geez, that was 1989? I remember the finals match. I'm pretty sure I watched it on TV. Time does fly! That was the year that Varner won everything in sight.
TATE said:Jimmy,
You were the cool, good looking Dr. Kildare look alike. (That was before he came out of the closet, so it was OK). Johhny Archer showed his future promise but you were too slick for them all except Grady. The highlight was either when you said "Hi " to your mom on TV and the sunglasses, or that maybe that one straight back long rail bank shot you made. Anyway, that was great.
Thanks for the fun action and I enjoyed your BCN Derby city broadcast too.

Jimmy M. said:Hmm, I think you have the wrong Jimmy (I'm guessing you're thinking of Mataya). Although I did live in Lansing for about 6 years when I was a kid, I'm not the guy.
By the way, when I was a kid in Lansing, the mere mention of Jimmy's name would spark off group discussions between all the players in the room. If Jimmy was down at the pool room, people would be calling each other to get down to the pool room quick because Jimmy Mataya was there! I remember when I was 15 or so watching him beat some guy from Detroit they called "Poor Boy" out of like 12 or 13 thousand playing one pocket. And OH YEAH, he still had the mouth back then.
