hi,

I am looking for a new quick change tool posts and I want to know differences between Piston type and wedge type, any advice?

Thanks

The wedge type is suppose to be more accurate but for the difference in price, it may not be worth it for what we do.

I agree. I have both set up on different lathes. They say that the wedge type is supposed to have better repeatability but I like the piston one better. The wedge one seems to always be needing cleaning or oiling or something for the holders to fit properly.

There is a type also called the Italian style tool post. It has 2 90 deg vees and the holders are clamped into the Vee. They need to always be clean and work very well.To get best accuracy of the Italian type and the wedge type, a constant torque on the clamping mechanism helps alot.
There is another piston type that pushes the toolholder out and locking it to a dovetail of some type. While these work ok for light work, they are not as repeatable as a wedge, Italian style, or a swiss style.I have the dickson small Italian style holders and 1 setup from Chris Hightower. The Hightower works well, but is not as good as the dickson's that I have, however the Hightower is fit for purpose for cuemaking.
I am assuming you have a cuesmith lathe or something similar. If you have a larger metal type lathe, then a ground block Italian style or a wedge style will work well.
I would not recomend a none ground tool holders and holding block. The ground ones cost more, but for the repeatabilty, they make life very easy.
