Top 5 pool players ever

a person could have never won a tournament and still be the best overall. most wins mean an awful lot but a slew of top finishes could mean more.

the only way to tell if one player is better than a single another if close is playoffs between them over time.

For the cash there is so much embellishment we can't know. But the stories are always interesting.

Ronnie is really incredible. His dominance was unmatched in cue sports.
Wrong!

We can and do know. I was there I watched it, sometimes it was my $ or I had a part of it. Jay has the maths spot on.

And no we didn’t bullshit about how much is “in the middle” to make it sound bigger. $1000 sets were $1000 per side and called “$1000 sets” not this sales pitch sizzle $2000 in the middle. wtf does that mean? We didn’t bet to get views or attention. We bet to gamble and make $ not for attention.

We have lived this our whole lives, jays got 60 years I got 40 years. That’s a century between us. We don’t need to bullshit or whore out our gambling information for attention. And there are loads of other guys who bet more and longer than Jay or myself. Jay saw it, I saw some of it. What Jay said is true-period

Yes you are spot on about Ronnie, nobody’s a close 2nd in any cue sport. 🫡

Can you imagine a pool player who could accomplish what he has? Wow

Only for about twenty years! He was The Man (Amang) here too, not just in the Philippines. 9-Ball or Ten Ball!

Jose and his crew stopped by my poolroom in the mid 90's

soft spoken , no bullshit, confident man who was a pleasure to speak with

i swapped him a SW cue for a 24K gold "money" chain, good deal because both pieces would be worth over 6K in today's $$$

( i think he heard the owner might play some, however, the owner knew who he was)

the best means all around not just 9 ball. so most lists are worth nothing.

like who was the best baseball player. the one with the most home runs, or batting average. or all around playing?

I'm not saying you or Jay are lying, but you weren't there for all the action with all the players. And pool players themselves have a tendency to exaggerate quite a bit. My dad used to play Bobby Hunter and many other players and my uncle was one of Marky Beilfis' sparring partners in 14.1. I don't know as much as you, but I was raised around pool. Actually the poster Curlys Cues taught me much about the game (my dad used to say he wouldn't teach me until I learned how to make shots).
.
Appreciate you old heads and your knowledge, I'm sure you have great stories.

Apparently mixing Italian and Irish makes for a good cuesman (I know he was born in England).

I've always been suprised he can't crossover to 9 ball that well. But our players damn sure weren't going to go whoop him in snooker. He at one point said he didn't even like billiards he just played so his dad could see him in prison. Lol.

SAME!! How's your back? GOOD, i hope
I’m doing pretty good thx. My back still hurts, but no pills for the last 14-15 years. It hurts but it’s tolerable. The good news is the other discs above the surgeries I had are all very healthy. It was 50/50 it would stay ok or more degenerative disc disease. Lucky is it’s not there and my discs are good🙏🏼.

Lots of other stuff going on. I’ll make a post about that very soon. Which is why I popped up here. Said I’d be back. I’ll never disappear-not my style.

My very best

I've been around and absolutely love your opinion, sometimes people gamble better(by far) ultimate pressure for them in tourneys means not so much pressure gambling. Cheers to everybody that has an opinion

Efren
Nick Varner
Earl

In any order and I would still be satisfied.

The players in the past was sloppy with shape so every shot was just that crucial. They incorporated banks shots and can kick a ball. Most importantly they were creative players.

Nothing against today’s players. They get perfect shape but they can’t kick and lack creativity.

Put it this way the commentators today can draw the path from the 1 ball to the 9.

In the past they will draw the path to the 9 and sometimes they were wrong because the players got creative and did it another way.

Yup, Efren won that event just once, but he was in the finals 4 years in a row, 1994-1997. That's pretty good.
No one suggested Efren wasn't good. He was great. But he definitely never "dominated 9 ball". That's revisionist history. Earl dominated 9 ball while Efren was on the circuit.
