tournament % break down

I was wondering ..... what is the normal break down for a tournament as far as percentages ..... a in house league owner said that he would pay out all 10 teams. how would you break this down:eek:

1st
2nd
3rd
4th
5th
6th
7th
8th
9th
10th

he was trying to tell me that the $ between first and 2nd was $50.00 this is crazy.....

2nd- Too little
3-5th- Same as 2nd
6-10th-Too much

Mike, sorry to not really answer your question, but I find it crazy when the top team doesn't even break even.

It would depend on the number of participants. Most tournaments of 8 or more will have a 25% payout structure. From there, the percentages will vary according to format (single-elimination, double-elimination, round-robin, etc.) and again, the number of participants. 1st is usually no greater than 50% and usually no less than 25%. 2nd is usually no greater than 50% of 1st. 3rd/4th is usually no greater than 50% of 2nd and so on.
 
Could be setup like bowling leagues, since all teams get a portion back. Total money/total games=amount paid per game won. Take that per game total and figure out how much each team gets based on their wins.

4th - 10%
5th - 6.25%
6th - 6.25%
7th - 6.25%
8th - 6.25%
9th - Entry fee
10th - Entry fee

The percentage #s are less the 2 entry fee returns. This is not exact, most tournaments would round the figures to nearest even increments so that $1s or $5s weren't needed to pay places.

That is the reason I quit playing leagues (APA, BCA, TAP). I am about to join a league that has much higher payouts (neither of the 3 I listed above)

I guess I didnt realize that leagues were about making money. Sure seems like people that want to make money play tourneys and gamble. Leagues are socialization, fun, learning, and any money won is like added bonus. So IMO it should be deep payouts as added incentive.

Money shouldnt be the sole incentive of playing leagues.

Money wasn't our main motivation but after you win your league 3 or 4 times and lose money doing it it starts to not be as fun. Why bust your ass to lose money even if you win the whole thing? JMHO

To give you an Idea.... the Twin Cities has a laegue which pays out in 3 Divisions.... last year the Open division which has a handicap... paid the first place team $11,500.00........ that is for a end of the year league tournament.. for the Twin Cities area.... not bad to split with 5 people

The is a great league it is called M-8
 
i agree with perk, more or less. i'd take some off the top, to add to 1st place though.

Money may not be the main incentive in playing leagues, but it would be nice to break even if you win. I understand it takes time and money to run a league. Let's say a lower level player played in a handicapped tournament, but still gave themself little chance on doing good. They surprise themself and win, and then don't even get their entry fee back. They may have had fun and learned from better players, but do you think they would not be a little upset? I find more and more players being turned off by leagues, usually because of the low payouts. Of course, you can make money in certain leagues, but this often means state or national tournaments. Like Mike stated, M-8 pays out a bunch of money at their state tournament- they also have something like 6000 players!

The idea that you have to make money in league play is what causes the sandbagging and rating issues.

In bowling leagues you get a small amount back at years end which is a nice kickback for playing all year, but everyone gets money back even though its smaller based on points/wins. Golf leagues are setup the same way. Your not playing those leagues for the money. You play for other reasons.

In both there are other side pots that you can get in and play for etc that help keep players involved that are playing for money. Bowling have brackets/3-6-9/10th frame pots etc, golf has proxies and other gambling options.

No league I have played in in any of the 3 sports/games have you had a chance to break even for playing a season. I think that if you want to play for money and are concerned with breaking even, play tourneys and gamble. Use leagues to get your fix in other ways. Its the greedy players that turn off league play to the beginners and stunting overal pool growth. IMO.

Anything you get back from league play whether it be prizes, money, or trips to big tourneys (Vegas) should be just an added benefit.
