Working for 57 years and not being able to afford to play pool is kinda crazy though.

I must live in pool nirvana: my local room has ten nice GC4's for 5/hr during the day. tournaments are around 20-30 weekly and 50-60 for bigger monthly deals. There's a sen.ctr about 20min away that's 50/year for all the play you want. There's a couple bars that do free pool on certain days. I'm far from rich but pool around me is more than affordable.

as was told you would be able to live off social security when you retire.
that didn't hold true with inflation that hit things over what the index said.
sad but many are right on the poverty level after retirement. so the golden years are not so golden.

That truly does suck. I'm a millennial so I can't relate, but I can definitely empathize with that.

What is the obsession with scotch doubles tournaments?
It seems every pool hall in the state has a hard-on for "1100 combined Fargo" scotch doubles tournaments. And you guessed it, they're all on 7ft tables, even though there are 9ft tables available. Fargo capped tournaments and scotch doubles will be the death of elite pool in the USA lol.
Imagine spending $1K on a cue, $800 on a break cue, and $500 on a jump cue just to say you beat someone in a race to 3 on a barbox.
Oh yeah and you won $95 for coming in 1st place. MOM!! GET THE CAMERA!!!
Can you tell I despise leagues? (sorry not sorry to 95% of players on this forum)

everyone has their own level on things they do or can do. some cant get past a muni golf course in ability,like go out every weekend and even play in the club tournaments.

I hear that a lot, but then it seems like every time an open tournament is held, nobody shows.
If I were a TD, I don't know that I'd spend much time on them either.
I do hate the silly scotch double nonsense, but I just don't play in them...
Everything is expensive, and maybe a part time job will find fund stuff.
Similar here around Austin. Most are like $5-6/hr or $10-13 to play open to 6pm and $6-8/hr after that. Nearly all of the better rooms here have either 8 or 9 foot Diamonds. A couple of the Fast Eddie's/Eddie's Taverns here will let you play for free certain days if you wear one of their t-shirts.
I'm not a senior yet so I can't speak to that part.
why would anyone show up for an open tournament where they haven't a chance to win unless they are one of the top three players?
suckers are only suckers for so long. hit someone over the head with a frying pan often enough and eventually they will learn to duck.
although enough seem to come to keep the tournament trail alive. and have lots of scars to prove it.
Fifteen years ago in Phoenix there were many Bar tournament in the $5.00-$7.00 Entry Free Range. Not some many today, as many of the Pool Bar in Phoenix have gone away. Bar business is taught business to make a living, this was just an observation. As few Bar Owners were driving new car.
The money that can be won at Piazza's is damn good though!!
Again,WTH?????? You keep talking about prices from 15-20yrs ago. The 5-7dollar stuff is now 20-30 just like EVERYTHING else you buy. start living in the current century. There's GILLIONS of bar/club tournaments nationwide that are under 40bux to play in. Probably a bunch in the 20ish range too. BTW, i just went on a Arizona players FB page. In less than 30seconds i found tournaments for under 20bux. Tailgaters has one TONIGHT for 15bux. with a break-n-run bonus pot to boot.
So? I don't play pool for money, I play for competition and to be better.
I'd rather be the best shooter in the room instead of the worst player who won a couple thousand.
Fargo-capped scotch doubles barbox is not my thing.
Added money is the same or worse than it was 20-30 years ago. You would think with all the live streams and new products there would be much more.

Twice as many people hanging around buying drinks/food and they don't report to Fargo so the sandbaggers can protect their rankings. Also lets high ranked folks avoid capped tourneys.
