Tournament Help?

Hello all,
I have recently (past couple of months) started and been running a weekly tournament. Format is:
Alternating weekly 8 and 9 ball
8 ball race to 2 DE APA
9 ball race to three DE texas express
10$ entry w/ 3$ of every ten into break pot
If ten or less players I draw 1 for break contest
If more than ten I draw 2 (2 attempts each)
Anyway, I have been getting a fair turnout of between ten and sixteen players every week (pretty good for this town IMO). I obviously want a larger turnout and we have the league players (APA) in town here, so how do I get 'em in here? A friend recommends changing it to race to one double elimination eight ball only. Any opinions on this? At this time the players that do come are, generally, the better players in town and I know they will have a problem with this format. So how do I keep them coming while attracting the lower leveled players? I know summer is nearly upon us, and I expect the turnout to drop a little, but I am hoping for the best. I would really hate to see this tourny, which has been doing pretty well, die out like so many others in this town. Any input is welcome and appreciated.
Thanks alot,
David~~first time tourny director :D

One weekly format that was very popular around here was single elimination, race to 3 nineball. Even the weak players felt they had some chance.
(Disclaimer: I think that double elimination is close to the worst format for tournaments.)

In my area, we have a few places that run a race to one 8-ball tourny, double elimination. Each weekly winner qualifies for a bigger tourny at a later date. Ya gotta play more than once, besides winning to qualify. This keeps the lower players coming back for more. You can also play the tourny on as little as one or two tables.

Then why is it so popular? I think the pro tour or at least the Joss and Viking tours are double. Correct?

My experience with DE is that if I lose in an early round, I have to play a jillion matches to finish in the money. If I lose in a later round, there's lots of waiting for my next match.

With single elimination, you're not guaranteed as much play, but if you lose, you can go home. The downside is that some people don't want the chance of being eliminated by a bad draw -- they want a second chance. One possible change is to have single elimination with buy-backs, something like DCC.

But for a weekly tournament, I think plain SE is fine. If the players want to play more -- or if the owner wants people around longer to buy drinks -- make the matches longer.

i run two a week. rated 9 ball this winter i had more than i could handle, very popular, had as many as46 players on sunday night. got through about1.30 .double elemation. race to rating, rated from2-7minus1 $12.00 to play .good pay back.$10.00 goes to the pot plus players auction. you will have some difficulty with rating, but It seemes to work here, good luck STICK

Just the thought of handicapping and listening to the whining makes my head hurt.
Thanks for the replies everyone.
